Chapter 9 - The Encryption Key

The grandfather clock in the cabin’s living room struck three in the morning. Outside, a light drizzle fell over the pines, tapping rhythmically against the reinforced window panes. Dominic sat at the heavy oak desk in the study, the Morozov micro-drive plugged into an isolated, military-grade terminal.
Lines of complex hexadecimal code scrolled endlessly across the screen. Nikolai’s encryption was formidable—a multi-layered 512-bit cipher that would take conventional supercomputers months to crack.
Decode the ledger, Elena had pleaded. Why would she urge him to decipher it before rescuing her? The drive had to contain something beyond simple account numbers—something that altered the balance of power.
Dominic leaned back, rubbing his weary temples. He needed a decryption key, a sequence of alphanumeric characters that only Elena would have chosen. A date? A location?
""What is that?""
Dominic turned. Maya stood in the doorway, rubbing her eyes, clutching Barnaby by one ear. She walked over to the desk, peering curiously at the cascading lines of green code on the black screen.
""It's a puzzle, sweetheart,"" Dominic said softly. ""A puzzle your mommy made.""
Maya tilted her head, her gaze drifting to the bottom of the screen where an input prompt blinked rhythmically: ENTER PASSKEY.
""Mommy sang a song when she sewed Barnaby,"" Maya whispered, pointing a small finger at the screen. ""A funny song about stars and numbers.""
Dominic's pulse quickened. ""Do you remember the words, Maya?""
""Seven little stars over Altair... nine fallen leaves... four silent winters,"" she recited in a childish cadence, rocking back and forth on her bare heels.
Dominic's fingers flew across the keyboard: 7ALTAIR9LEAVES4WINTERS.
He struck the enter key.
The screen flashed red, then flared into vibrant emerald green. The layers of encryption shattered like fragile glass, revealing folders upon folders of classified files, blueprints, and audio recordings.
At the very top of the decrypted directory was a single document labeled: PROJECT PHOENIX: TARGET ELIMINATION PROTOCOL.
Dominic opened the file. His own photograph stared back at him, alongside detailed schedules of his daily movements, his private security codes, and a contract signed with blood.

The man who had ordered the hit on Dominic five years ago was not Nikolai Morozov.
It was Dominic’s closest ally and second-in-command—Julian Vance, his own brother.
