Chapter 4 - In The Blind Dark

Darkness engulfed the penthouse like a suffocating shroud. Down below, the distant hum of the city’s emergency sirens bled through the glass, but the apartment itself fell into an absolute, unnatural silence. The backup generators—designed to trigger within three seconds of a blackout—failed to engage.

Sabotage.

Dominic didn't hesitate. Drawing his sidearm in the pitch black, he navigated the familiar terrain of his living room by muscle memory alone. He lunged toward the corner armchair where the little girl—Maya—slept.

A sudden crash of shattered glass reverberated through the grand entrance. Footsteps, heavy and tactical, crossed the threshold with calculated haste.

Dominic scooped Maya into his left arm just as she began to wail in confusion. ""Shh. Quiet, little one,"" he breathed directly into her ear, his deep voice acting as a steadying anchor. He retreated behind the solid oak pillar supporting the central mezzanine, setting the girl down behind his boots.

A red laser sight swept across the dark wall opposite them, slicing through the gloom. Two figures moved into the open living space, tactical silhouettes equipped with night-vision optics.

""Check the sofa,"" a voice whispered in Russian. ""Take the woman. Kill the girl.""

Dominic stepped out from the pillar's shadow before the first intruder could reach Elena. He fired twice with lethal precision. The suppressor spat twin muffs of compressed air; the lead operative dropped instantly to the floor with two center-mass hits.

The second intruder pivoted, weapon raised, but Dominic closed the distance in a ferocious burst. He slammed the barrel of his gun into the man's temple, swept his legs from underneath him, and drove his knee into the man's throat on the marble floor.

""Who sent you?"" Dominic demanded, pressing his muzzle against the operative's forehead.

The man choked on blood, a grotesque grin twisting his lips beneath his balaclava. ""The boss... already has what he came for.""

A sickening cold sensation settled in Dominic's chest. He whipped his head toward the sofa.

Elena was gone.
