Chapter 12 - The Descent of Guilt

Mark couldn't move. His boots felt rooted in the damp cellar soil. He looked at Toby, wanting desperately to see his son, but the reality warping around the boy made his stomach twist in horror.

Behind Toby on the staircase came Clara.

She did not walk; she drifted downward, her body suspended inches above the wooden risers. The knit blanket hung from her shoulders like a shroud, frayed and dripping with foul-smelling water. Her skin was the color of winter ash, her hair floating around her head as if submerged in a dark lake.

""You told me he was safe,"" Clara said, her voice a chorus of weeping and rage that rattled the foundation of the house. ""You said you took him to the clinic. You said they gave him the medicine.""

""I did!"" Mark cried out, dropping to his knees. The leather vest felt suffocating, crushing his lungs. ""The doctor said he was sick! There was nothing they could do!""

""You left him in the car, Mark,"" Jax muttered from the shadows, his voice breaking. Jax pulled out an old, faded photograph from his jacket pocket—the same photo of a young biker holding a newborn baby wrapped in a hospital towel. ""You went inside the tavern for one drink. Just one drink to calm your nerves.""

The memories crashed through the fortress of Mark’s denial with the force of a tidal wave.

The sweltering August heat. The neon sign buzzing outside the dive bar. The condensation dripping down a bottle of cheap beer. The twenty minutes that turned into two hours. The frantic run back to the parking lot. The silent backseat.

""No, God, please, no..."" Mark sobbed, digging his fingers into the cellar dirt, weeping openly as the false reality of the cozy suburban afternoon crumbled into ash.
