Chapter 2 - The Floor Beneath

The house was sixty years old, settled deep into a quiet suburb where old oak trees arched over cracked asphalt. Mark stood frozen, one knee pressed into the carpet, his heart hammering against his ribs. The thump had not been the metallic clang of the water heater, nor the hollow rattle of the ventilation ducts. It had sounded like a heavy boot shifting its weight across bare earth.

""Clara,"" Mark said softly, his voice trembling slightly.

Clara didn't wake. Her breathing remained unusually shallow, her chest barely rising. Toby moved closer to her, positioning his small frame between the couch and the dark hallway. He didn't cry or panic; his hazel-blue eyes were fixed on the baseboard beneath the television cabinet.

Mark walked cautiously to the hallway, flipping the switch for the cellar stairs. The bulb flickered to life, casting a sickly yellow hue over the wooden steps that descended into the damp darkness. A cool, stale draft billowed upward, carrying the scent of damp soil and iron.

""Is someone down there?"" Mark called out, gripping the doorframe. His knuckles turned pale.

Silence answered him. Even the distant patter of rain outside seemed to hold its breath. Mark descended three steps, peering into the shadows. The basement was filled with half-unpacked cardboard boxes from their move eight months ago, dusty garden tools, and an old workbench left behind by the previous tenant, an elderly recluse who had vanished without a trace.

Mark took another step. The wooden riser groaned beneath his weight. At the bottom of the stairs, in the corner where the concrete foundation met raw dirt, something caught the light. A fresh footprint in the soil, narrow and deeply pressed.

A sharp gasp echoed from the living room above.

Mark sprinted back up the stairs, two at a time, bursting into the room with his chest heaving. Toby was standing upright on the couch, his little hands tugging violently at Clara's knit blanket.

""Mama!"" Toby shrieked, the gentle whisper gone, replaced by raw panic. ""Wake up, Mama!""

Clara’s eyelids fluttered, but her eyes rolled back into her head as her hands clenched into tight fists.
