Chapter 14 - The Final Setting

Toby lowered the remote. The strange, otherworldly violet light that had glowed from its sensor began to dim, replaced by a warm, golden glow reminiscent of late-afternoon sunlight through sheer living room curtains.

""Daddy,"" Toby said, his voice returning to the sweet, fragile tone of a fourteen-month-old child. ""Turn off the TV.""

Mark swallowed hard, his breath catching in his throat. He understood what the boy was asking. The illusion had to die. The fake house, the fake suburban peace, the endless cycle of waking up Clara only to watch her slip back into the nightmare—it all had to end.

With trembling hands, Mark reached out and took the remote from Toby’s tiny fingers. For a brief second, he felt the impossible, tender warmth of his son’s skin against his own. It was soft, smelling faintly of baby powder and sweet milk.

""I love you, Toby,"" Mark whispered, his tears dropping onto the plastic buttons.

""Love you, Daddy,"" Toby smiled, stepping back toward Clara.

Clara wrapped the knit blanket around the boy, lifting him gently into her arms, exactly as she had done on the couch in the dream. She rested her chin on his soft head, closed her eyes, and let out a long, peaceful breath.

Mark pressed his thumb against the red power button.

The golden light flared into a silent supernova, washing away the cellar, the stone walls, the muddy trench, and Jax’s sorrowful face, swallowing everything in an all-consuming sea of white.
