Chapter 14 - The Departure

The afternoon wind carried the scent of pine and ocean salt across the bluff. Elena stayed on the terrace for an hour, showing Brandon the specific way Clara had hummed to soothe Leo during his evening restlessness. She showed him how the boy liked his back rubbed in slow, rhythmic circles, and how he preferred looking at the green leaves of the magnolia tree when he was fighting sleep.
Brandon absorbed every detail like a man learning to breathe after a lifetime underwater. He took notes in a small leather book, asking questions with humble, focused reverence.
When it was time to leave, Elena stood up and gently uncurled Leo’s fingers from her coat sleeve. The baby whined softly, but Brandon pulled him against his chest, rocking him with steady, confident warmth.
"He will know who you are, Elena," Brandon said, extending his hand. "When he is old enough to understand what courage looks like, I will tell him about the night you went into the water. I will tell him that everything he has—his life, his father's return to sanity—began with you."
Elena looked at his outstretched hand. For a moment, the memory of his cold voice on the wet patio flashed through her mind. Then she looked at his eyes, clear and grounded in a quiet, profound remorse.

She turned and walked down the wide stone steps, past the manicured hedges, and through the tall wrought-iron gates that had once closed behind her like a prison door. This time, they stood wide open, framing the blue horizon of the ocean beyond.
