Chapter 15 - The Clear Horizon

Six months later, Elena stood in the doorway of a small, bright storefront in the university district of the neighboring city. The sign above the lintel read Alvarez Archival & Research Services. The shelves were lined with leather-bound legal codes, municipal records, and neatly organized reference boxes. She had chosen a profession where the truth was not taken for granted—where every claim required proof, and every silent voice was given a record.
A small package had arrived in the morning mail. It contained a single silver picture frame.
Inside the frame was a photograph of Brandon and Leo, taken on the cliffside trail above the ocean. Brandon was laughing, his hair ruffled by the sea wind, holding a now-toddling Leo on his shoulders. On the back of the photograph, written in a clear, deliberate hand, was a short inscription:

He walked his first steps today, Elena. He went straight toward the water, but this time, his father was holding both his hands. We will never let go. With eternal respect, Brandon and Leo.
Elena set the frame on her desk, beside her ledger and her favorite pen. Outside, the bells of the university chapel began to ring, clear and resonant through the crisp spring air. She opened her notebook to a fresh, white page, picked up her pen, and began her day’s work under the warm, unimpeded morning light.
