Chapter 9 - The Fracture

Brandon’s face did not turn red; it turned the color of ash. The glass in his hand slipped, shattering against the parquet floor with a sharp crack that silenced the immediate conversation around them.

"Brandon?" Victoria’s voice floated over, her smile already slipping as she noticed the broken glass. She stepped forward, her heels clicking against the wood. "What happened? Did this girl—"

She stopped dead. Her eyes landed on the tablet lying on the silver tray, where the loop had just reset to the moment her foot struck the brake lever.

"Where did you get that?" Victoria breathed, the blood instantly draining from her lips. Her manicured hand rose instinctively toward her throat. "Brandon, that’s... that’s an altered file. In the age of digital fabrication, anyone can—"

"Shut up," Brandon said.

It was not a yell. It was a sound so low, so dense with cold fury that even the catering staff across the room froze. Brandon took the tablet from Elena’s tray with hands that shook violently.

"You told me the system failed," Brandon said, his voice trembling as he stepped toward his sister-in-law. "You stood in my home, next to my wife’s child, and told me that Elena tried to murder him."

"Brandon, listen to me," Victoria whispered, her eyes darting frantically across the gathered guests, who were now turning to watch the confrontation. "I was trying to show you... you were blind! You were letting this girl raise Clara’s son! She was taking my sister’s place, piece by piece, and you were too broken to see it! I had to make you see that you needed family!"

"You pushed him into eight feet of water," Brandon said, his words dropping like lead weights onto the polished floor. "He was six months old. He was wrapped in a blanket that would have dragged him straight to the drain."

"I was going to pull him out!" Victoria cried, her composure finally shattering into jagged, ugly pieces. "I was standing right behind the glass! I would have jumped in! But she... she came out of nowhere and ruined it!"

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Two private security guards, recognizing the catastrophic shift in the room's dynamic, moved silently into position behind Victoria.

Brandon turned away from her, unable to look at her face for another second. His eyes found Elena, who was standing quietly by the server's cart, her posture straight, her expression entirely free of triumph.

"Elena," Brandon whispered, the word breaking in his chest. "What have I done?"
