Chapter 5 - Echoes in the Nursery

Inside the Vance villa, silence had taken on a predatory quality. Brandon sat in the high-backed armchair in Leo’s nursery, staring at the empty crib. The baby was sleeping down the hall in the guest suite under the care of the agency nurse, but Brandon could not bring himself to leave the room where his late wife had spent her final healthy days.

A light knock sounded at the door. Victoria entered without waiting for an answer, carrying a small porcelain cup of chamomile tea. She wore a soft cashmere cardigan over a simple silk blouse, having shed the dramatic dresses for an aura of maternal simplicity.

"You haven't eaten, Brandon," she said gently, placing the tea on the side table. "You can't keep torturing yourself like this. The child is safe. The girl is gone. We are moving forward."

"He doesn't smile at the new nurse," Brandon said, his voice rasping. "When Elena held him, he was quiet. He tracked her face across the room. Now he just screams until his face turns purple."

Victoria’s smile stiffened for a fraction of a second before softening back into practiced sympathy. "She was an employee, Brandon. Manipulative people often develop an uncanny ability to soothe children to make themselves indispensable. It’s a classic trait of domestic grifters. You were vulnerable, and she exploited your grief."

Brandon didn't answer. He picked up a small stuffed elephant that lay beside the crib—the toy Elena had washed and dried by hand three times a week because Leo insisted on chewing its ears. "The police report came back inconclusive," Brandon muttered. "They found no foreign prints on the stroller handles other than Elena’s and mine."

"Because she was the only one handling it," Victoria replied smoothly, walking toward the window that overlooked the dimly lit swimming pool. "It is painful to admit when someone we trusted fails us so catastrophically, but we must protect Leo’s future. In fact, my attorney called today regarding the family conservatorship. With Clara gone and your responsibilities expanding at the firm, it might be prudent to name me as Leo’s secondary guardian. Purely as a legal safeguard, of course."

Brandon looked up from the toy. For the first time, a faint flicker of unease registered behind his tired eyes. "His guardianship is tied to Clara’s estate trust, Victoria. It requires a unanimous board sign-off."

"A board that respects my dedication to this family," she replied softly, meeting his gaze without flinching. "Think about it, Brandon. For Leo."

After she left, Brandon walked to the window. Down below, the pool water rippled under the artificial wind, blue and bottomless. He remembered the look in Elena’s eyes as she knelt on the stone—not the panic of a caught criminal, but the shattered disbelief of someone who had offered their life only to be told it was worthless.
