Chapter 14 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The sirens painted the wet tarmac in frantic flashes of crimson and cobalt. Within seconds, a dozen tactical federal officers swarmed the runway, assault rifles leveled, cutting off any escape to the idling jet.
Eleanor’s pale face finally cracked. The aristocratic sneer dissolved into raw, unadulterated panic as she looked around at the wall of weapons.
""Step away from the aircraft, Eleanor Vance!"" an officer shouted through a bullhorn. ""Drop to your knees and place your hands behind your head!""
""How dare you!"" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking with wild outrage as she backed toward the cabin stairs. ""I am a Vance! You do not touch me! Marcus, shoot them! Kill them!""
Marcus didn't move. He stood with his hands raised, his head bowed, fully aware that the empire had just collapsed.
Two federal agents moved in swiftly, grabbing Eleanor’s frail, mink-clad arms. With unceremonious precision, they forced her down onto the wet tarmac. Her designer shoes slipped in the grease-stained rainwater, her silver hair coming undone, tumbling in wild strands across her wrinkled face.
""Julian! Tell them who I am!"" she shrieked, looking up at her son with manic eyes. ""You are my blood! You cannot do this to your own mother!""
Julian stood over her, the rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead. For thirty years, he had lived under the shadow of this woman’s suffocating will. He had watched her break his father’s spirit; he had allowed her to bring poison into his home. But looking down at her now, he saw only a pathetic, hollow monster dying in the dirt of her own greed.
""My mother died the day you killed Elena,"" Julian said softly.
He didn't yell. He didn't gloat. He simply reached down and plucked the heirloom emerald ring from her finger—the Vance family ring that his father had given her, the ring she had used to stamp her authority on so many ruined lives.
""Take her away,"" Julian said to the arresting agent.
As Eleanor was dragged toward the back of the tactical transport, screaming curses that were drowned out by the whining turbines, Agent Martinez walked up beside Julian. She handed him an umbrella and a warm thermos of black coffee.
""The district court just unsealed your father’s original will,"" Martinez said quietly. ""The Vance estate, the holdings, the foundations—it all passes directly to Lily, with you as the sole surviving executor. Victoria has already agreed to a full confession in exchange for avoiding life in solitary. It’s over, Julian.""

Julian looked up at the grey sky as the rain slowly began to abate, revealing small patches of pale blue between the clouds.
""It’s not over yet,"" Julian whispered, turning his back on the runway. ""I have a promise to keep.""
