Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Elena

They moved like ghosts through the freezing drizzle, guided only by the dim red beam of Thomas’s military flashlight. Julian carried Lily wrapped in two layers of wool, his arms burning with fatigue, but he refused to let Thomas take her. Every muscle in his body burned with an exhaustion he had never known, but a terrifying clarity kept him walking forward.

Every lie he had lived for the past three years peeled away in the cold mountain air. He remembered the night Elena died. It was raining just like this. The police had called it a tragic hit-and-run, an unidentified commercial van that fled the scene. Julian had been paralyzed by grief, entirely reliant on his mother’s comfort. It was Eleanor who had arranged the funeral, Eleanor who had handled the estate, Eleanor who had introduced Victoria into his life six months later as a ""steadying hand"" for young Lily.

He had invited the viper into his child’s nursery.

""Here,"" Thomas whispered, dropping to one knee beside an abandoned concrete bunker that once served as a maintenance depot for the defunct rail line.

Julian followed him inside. The air was dry and smelled of rusted iron and old oil. Thomas quickly pulled a heavy steel security door shut, dropping an iron bar across the latch. He flicked on a battery-powered lantern, setting it on a dusty workbench.

""Sit,"" Thomas ordered. He pulled out a field ration, some bottled water, and a clean fleece blanket.

Julian sat on an overturned crate, resting Lily on his lap. He fed her small sips of water and crackers until her eyelids grew heavy. Exhaustion finally overtook the terror, and she drifted into a deep sleep, wrapped in the warmth of the fleece.

Julian looked up at Thomas. ""How did you find out about the will?""

Thomas pulled a battered external hard drive from his tactical vest and tossed it to Julian. ""Elena wasn't just your wife, Julian. She was a forensic accountant. She suspected Eleanor had embezzled millions from the charity foundations to pay off bad offshore debts. When your father died, Elena started digging into the estate papers. She found the true copy of your father’s last will and testament. It gave fifty-one percent of Vance Holdings to Lily, with you and Elena as sole guardians.""

""And if Lily died?"" Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, cold with dread.

""Everything would revert to Eleanor,"" Thomas said flatly. ""And Victoria wasn't brought in to be your wife, Julian. She was brought in to create a paper trail of child neglect, to have you declared incompetent, so Eleanor could claim legal guardianship of Lily. Once that happened... Lily was never going to live to see her eighteenth birthday.""

Julian stared at the sleeping face of his child. A dark, terrifying beast awakened inside his chest—a fury so profound it obliterated all fear, all hesitation, all mercy.

""Where is the original document?"" Julian asked.

""In the safety deposit vault at First Dominion Bank in the city center,"" Thomas said. ""Under Elena’s maiden name. But you can't get within two miles of that bank. Every federal agent and city cop is watching for your face.""

Julian slowly touched the bruise on his jaw. ""Then we don't go as Julian Vance. We go as a ghost.""
