Chapter 6 - The Web of Lies

Julian’s blood turned to ice. ""Kidnapping? At gunpoint? That’s an outright lie! I don't even own a gun!""

""Doesn't matter,"" Thomas said, his hands steady on the steering wheel as the pickup navigated the winding mountain roads away from the county line. ""Eleanor owns two city councilmen, the chief of county police, and the largest media conglomerate in the state. By midnight, your face will be on every billboard, TV screen, and gas pump from here to the border. They’ve constructed the perfect narrative: the grieving widower who finally snapped, dangerous, unpredictable, holding a child hostage.""

Julian looked down at Lily, who had slipped back into sleep, her tiny face pale under the truck’s dashboard light. He felt an overwhelming urge to scream, to break something with his bare hands. In the high-society world he had grown up in, reputation was currency, but Eleanor was playing for far more than social standing. She wanted absolute control. She wanted Lily as a ward of the estate, a legal pawn to secure the Vance inheritance, while Julian was either locked away in a psychiatric facility or put in a cell.

""Why now?"" Julian asked, his voice trembling with barely contained fury. ""Why go this far over a domestic dispute?""

Thomas threw a quick glance in the rearview mirror before speaking. ""Because the trust conditions Elena set up before she died are about to activate.""

Julian froze. ""Elena didn't have a trust. She had nothing when we married. My mother made sure of that with the prenuptial agreement.""

""That’s what Eleanor told you,"" Thomas replied with a bitter sneer. ""Elena wasn't stupid, Julian. She knew what your mother was capable of. Six months before she was killed, Elena discovered that your father had left the majority of the commercial real estate portfolio directly to Lily, bypassing Eleanor entirely, with Elena named as the sole trustee until Lily turned eighteen. If Elena died, the trusteeship was supposed to revert to you.""

The puzzle pieces began falling into place with terrifying speed. ""Eleanor hid the will.""

""She didn't just hide it. She paid off the probate judge to seal it under the guise of an unresolved corporate liability,"" Thomas said grimly. ""Elena was going to go to the federal authorities the week she was run down by that phantom truck. Eleanor knew that if you ever woke up, if you ever took Lily and left, that document would eventually come to light. You aren't just running from a family argument, Julian. You're running from the person who ordered my sister’s murder.""

The air was sucked clean from Julian’s lungs. He felt physically sick. The woman who raised him, who sat at his dinner table, who smiled as she offered Lily sweet tea—was a killer.

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the trees, followed by the blinding sweep of a spotlight piercing the rear window of the truck.
