The mahogany table stretched like an ocean between them, yet Clara felt entirely stranded under Julian Vance’s penetrating gaze. The opulent chandelier hummed with a quiet electric vibrance, casting fractured golden halos over the frozen faces of the estate's wealthy guests. Clara’s knuckles whitened against the rim of the empty silver tray she held against her apron.
""I asked where you learned that,"" Julian repeated, his voice low, velvety, and devoid of the theatrical anger typical of aristocrats. It held something far more dangerous: genuine curiosity.
Clara swallowed, the linen of her collar suddenly scratching against her throat. ""My mother, sir. She was a baker in the southern district. She believed that sugar was meant to elevate a pastry, not mask the bitter truths of cheap nuts.""
A quiet gasp rippled among the dinner guests. Lady Genevieve, seated two chairs down, scoffed softly into her napkin. But Julian did not blink. His sharp, dark eyes remained locked on Clara’s freckled face, tracing the fiery strands of copper hair escaping her neat bun. He looked at the half-eaten pecan pie as if deciphering an ancient code.
""Your mother,"" Julian murmured, rotating the heavy crystal tumbler of bourbon between his long fingers. ""And what was her name, girl?""
""Helena Vance,"" Clara replied before she could stop herself.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Julian’s hand froze entirely around the glass, his jaw tightening until a muscle leaped beneath his sun-bronzed skin. The silence cracked when Julian stood up abruptly, overturning a crystal wine goblet that bled crimson across the pristine white linen.
""Everyone out,"" Julian commanded without breaking eye contact with Clara. ""Now.""
