Chapter 14 - The Bitter Sweetness of Dawn

By dawn, the storm had dissipated into a gentle mist hovering over the manicured hedges and stone balustrades. Inside the warmth of the grand dining room, where the nightmare had begun twenty-four hours earlier, the atmosphere was quiet, stripped of false pleasantries and poisonous intrigue.
Julian sat in a large armchair by the roaring hearth, his left shoulder securely bound in clean white bandages. He looked exhausted, the dark circles beneath his eyes contrasting sharply with his pale skin, but there was a peace in his expression Clara had never seen before.
Clara walked into the room carrying a porcelain tray. On it rested a single slice of freshly baked pecan pie, steam rising softly from the spiced crust. She set it down on the table beside him.
Julian looked at the plate, then looked up at her, a faint, genuine smile curving the corner of his lips. ""Is this one safe?""
""Made from scratch,"" Clara replied, wiping her hands on a clean linen towel, sitting down across from him not as a servant, but as an equal. ""Toasted the pecans twice as long. Used only a quarter cup of dark molasses. Just as mother intended.""

Julian picked up his silver fork with his right hand, broke off a small piece of the warm pastry, and took a bite. He closed his eyes, chewing slowly as memories long buried seemed to wash over his features.
""It tastes like home,"" Julian murmured, opening his eyes, glistening with unspoken emotion. ""Welcome home, Clara.""
