Chapter 10 - Down into the Dark

By midnight, the storm outside broke against the high glass windows of the manor, lashing the brickwork with torrents of rain. The grand ballroom remained dark, but beneath the foundation, the wine cellar was prepared for a reckoning.
Julian and Clara stood in the shadows behind the towering oak wine racks, the dim lantern casting elongated, monstrous silhouettes along the damp stone walls. Footsteps echoed from the spiraling stone stairs above—the delicate, rhythmic click of Italian leather heels.
Lady Genevieve descended the stairs, clad in an opulent emerald silk gown draped in sable fur, holding a silver candelabra. Her expression was one of cold, triumphant serenity.
""Richard?"" she called out softly, her voice echoing in the gloom. ""Why summon me down into the dirt? Did you dispose of the body, or are you shivering over a corpse again?""
""Richard isn't here, Genevieve,"" a calm, familiar voice answered from the dark.
Genevieve stopped dead in her tracks. The candelabra trembled in her hand, casting flickering shadows across the suddenly pale planes of her beautiful, venomous face. Julian stepped into the circle of light, his dark suit impeccable, his eyes burning with quiet vengeance.
