Chapter 3 - Bitter Ingredients

The underground cellar smelled of aged oak, damp stone, and centuries of secrets. Julian shoved a heavy iron door open, flicking on a low amber light that illuminated a private laboratory adjoining the wine racks. He released Clara's wrist, leaving a faint red mark against her pale skin.

""Look at the silver fork on the tray,"" Julian ordered, pointing to the utensils he had carried down with them.

Clara approached the tray cautiously. The edge of the silver fork, where it had pierced the crust of the pie, was no longer shining. It was oxidized into an unnatural, iridescent violet black. A cold knot formed in Clara’s stomach.

""Belladonna extract,"" Julian said grimly. ""Concentrated enough to stop a man's heart within an hour. You said you baked it. You served it. Half the nobility in this province just watched you hand me a death sentence.""

""I swear to God, I only used flour, butter, molasses, and pecans!"" Clara cried out, terror bleeding through her composure. ""The pantry was locked. Chef Morrison gave me the supplies himself!""

""Morrison has served this house for thirty years,"" Julian challenged, stepping closer, testing her resolve. ""Why would he frame a girl who walked through the servant gates three days ago?""

Clara remembered the strange, bitter aroma wafting from the sugar tin when she measured it. ""The vanilla,"" she breathed, her mind racing. ""The bottle wasn't sealed. It smelled like crushed almond and burnt weed, but Morrison told me it was aged Madagascar extract.""

Julian's expression shifted from accusation to cold dread. ""That bottle didn't come from the pantry. It came from my private study. And only two people carry that key.""
