Chapter 2 - The Red Line

The four federal operatives who stepped into the room were not ordinary police officers. Their vests bore the discreet seal of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, accompanied by agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Counter-Proliferation Division. Lead Agent Marcus Cole stepped between Richard Sterling and Colonel Vance, his gaze cold, devoid of the civilian reverence Richard was accustomed to buying.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Richard bellowed, his face flushing crimson with indignant fury. "Do you have any idea who I am? I pay your department's annual appropriations through my corporate lobby! Get these thugs out of my daughter-in-law’s room immediately!"
Marcus didn't even blink. He reached into his coat, producing a thick manila folder wrapped in red security tape. "Richard Sterling, CEO of Sterling Marine Logistics. As of ten minutes ago, your federal security clearance has been summarily revoked under Title 50 of the War and National Defense Act. Your private maritime shipping terminals in New Jersey and Long Island are currently being seized by the Coast Guard and the FBI."
Julian tried to pull his wrist free from Margaret’s grasp, but she finally shoved him backward with dismissive force, sending him staggering into his mother’s designer heels. "You're insane," Julian hissed, clutching his bruised wrist to his chest. "You can't do this! This is a domestic hospital room! I am her husband!"
"Your marriage was a calculated transaction, Julian," Margaret said, stepping between the Sterlings and Abigail’s bed, her white uniform stark against the drab hospital walls. "You needed access to naval shipping manifests. You thought seducing an admiral’s daughter and marrying her would shield your father’s smuggling ring from military inspection."
Abigail raised her head from the pillows, her split lip trembling as she looked at her husband with dawning horror. "The manifest sheets... the ones I found hidden inside the wall safe behind your grandfather's portrait... they weren't civilian freight invoices, were they?"
Julian’s face drained of color. His smug, polished veneer began to crack, exposing the frantic boy beneath. "Abby, shut up! Don't say another word!"
"She doesn't need to speak," Marcus interjected, pulling a pair of high-tensile steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "The automated flash drives your wife removed from the house five hours ago have already been decrypted at Fort Meade. The Department of Defense has identified three shipments of dual-use naval turbine guidance systems routed through your shell companies in Panama, destined for sanctioned foreign adversaries."
Richard let out a harsh, bitter laugh, stepping in front of his son like an angry bull. "Fabrications! A pathetic military junta playing domestic games to cover an unhinged daughter’s breakdown! My attorneys will have an emergency injunction from the federal district judge signed before you even walk us down the hallway!"
"Call him," Margaret said quietly, stepping to Marcus’s side. "Call Judge Harrison. Let him know that Naval Intelligence just seized his personal offshore trust accounts in the Cayman Islands for accepting three million dollars from your defense contracting slush fund."
Richard froze. The silver fountain pen in his breast pocket seemed to grow heavy against his chest. For the first time, Eleanor Sterling took a step back, her eyes darting toward the open hospital door.
"You're not arresting us here," Richard snarled, his voice dropping into a desperate, feral rasp. "We have twenty private security contractors stationed in the main lobby, armed with state-issued carry permits. You won't make it to the parking garage without a massacre."
Marcus smiled a grim, toothless smile. "Look out the window, Mr. Sterling."
Richard slowly turned toward the fourth-floor window overlooking the medical center courtyard. Below, under the orange glow of the streetlamps, three matte-black armored personnel carriers had blocked all four exits. Dozens of heavily armed operators wearing night-vision equipment and carrying suppressed carbines were quietly cordoning off the perimeter.
"This is kidnapping!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking into a high pitch as he backed away toward the adjoining bathroom. "You can't take me! I didn't push her! I swear I didn't push her!"
"Julian," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying cadence that made the young man freeze in his tracks. "You pushed her down twenty marble stairs. You listened to her bones break, and then you stood over her and threatened her life."
Margaret walked over to Julian, stopping mere inches from his chest. She leaned in, her gaze drilling straight through his hollow bravado.
"Your father cannot save you. Your money cannot save you. In seventy-two hours, you will stand before a military tribunal under treason charges—and the only mercy you will receive is whatever grace my daughter decides to grant you."

Margaret reached out, her fingers closing around Julian's silk tie, tightening it until his eyes bulged. Before she could let go, a sudden chime echoed from the encrypted tablet on Marcus’s belt, flashing a bright crimson priority-one alert: BREACH DETECTED AT SECURE CUSTODY TRANSIT POINT B.
Marcus grabbed Margaret’s arm. "Colonel. We need to move her now. The facility has been compromised."
