Chapter 5 - Highway of Shadows

The high-pitched screech of tearing metal tore through the interior of the cargo van as the armored truck rammed them again, spinning their rear axle toward the sheer concrete barrier of the George Washington Bridge. Below them, through the rusted gaps in the steel superstructure, the black waters of the Hudson River churned in the violent rainstorm.

"Hold on!" Frank roared, fighting the steering wheel with veins bulging along his weathered forearms. He stomped the brakes for a microsecond, allowing the chasing SUV to overshoot slightly, then slammed the gas pedal to the floorboard, using the reinforced steel plow mounted to the van's front chassis to clip the rear quarter-panel of the pursuing vehicle.

The black Suburban swerved violently, its tires screaming as it lost traction on the wet asphalt, spinning three full rotations before slamming broadside into an overhead electronic toll gantry with an explosion of shattered glass and sparks.

"One down!" Frank yelled, his cigar bobbing between his teeth. "Second one is coming up on our left flank! They’ve got a shooter leaning out the sunroof!"

A hail of high-velocity 7.62mm rounds ripped through the roof of the van, puncturing the thin aluminum skin like paper. Sparks showered down onto Abigail, who curled into a tight defensive ball beside the laptop rack.

Margaret didn't flinch. She picked up the suppressed carbine she had taken from the mercenary in the stairwell, adjusted the fire selector to single shot, and kicked open the rear emergency door against the hurricane-force wind rushing past at seventy miles per hour.

Rain whipped into Margaret’s face, soaking her white naval uniform within seconds, plastering her blonde hair against her cheekbones. She planted her feet wide on the textured steel deck, framed against the raging storm and the sprawling neon skyline of Manhattan disappearing behind them.

Through the red-dot sight, she tracked the driver of the second Suburban. The shooter in the sunroof saw her, swinging his heavy rifle toward her chest, but Margaret was faster.

Thump. Thump.

Two precise rounds shattered the driver's side windshield. The Suburban immediately veered sharply to the left, crossing three lanes of traffic at ninety miles per hour before careening head-on into an empty concrete divider, erupting into a violent fireball that illuminated the rainy night sky for half a mile.

Margaret slammed the rear door shut, latching the heavy steel deadbolt, and wiped the rainwater from her eyes with the sleeve of her soaked uniform. Abigail stared at her mother with wide, unblinking eyes, seeing for the first time the combat veteran whose legends had filled the halls of the Pentagon.

"Are you hit?" Margaret asked, kneeling down beside Abigail, her hands immediately checking her daughter’s limbs for shrapnel or gunshot wounds.

"No... no, I'm okay," Abigail whispered, reaching out to touch Margaret’s medal ribbons, now dripping with muddy road water. "Mom... what are they going to do to you for this? You killed people... you used military force on civilian roads..."

"I engaged hostile foreign combatants operating illegally within United States territory under the direct command of an enemy collaborator," Margaret said, her voice completely steady, her breathing controlled. "The Uniform Code of Military Justice provides clear protocol for defending state secrets and personnel under direct existential threat. I am fully protected under military law."

Frank glanced back in the rearview mirror. "Colonel, we just cleared the state line into New Jersey. But we’ve got a problem. The radio just picked up an automated APB issued by the New York City Police Commissioner’s office."

"What does it say, Frank?" Margaret demanded, pulling her secure communications tablet closer.

"They're calling it an armed parental abduction," Frank said grimly. "They’re claiming Colonel Margaret Vance suffered a severe psychological episode, shot two private hospital security guards, kidnapped the pregnant wife of Julian Sterling, and fled the jurisdiction in an unmarked government vehicle. They’ve authorized shoot-to-kill protocols for state troopers."

Abigail gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Pregnant? Mom, I'm not pregnant! They’re making that up so the police will use maximum force to 'rescue' me!"

Margaret stared at the red alert flashing on the tablet screen. The Sterling family wasn't just trying to cover up their crimes; they were orchestrating Abigail’s public execution by proxy, using corrupted civilian law enforcement to silence her before she could ever reach a federal courthouse.

Margaret reached into her tactical pocket and pulled out an encrypted satellite drive. "Frank. Change course."

"Where to, ma'am? We won't make the Adirondacks with every state trooper from here to Albany hunting this plate."

Margaret leaned forward, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "We don't run. We go to the one place Richard Sterling thinks he owns completely: the headquarters of the Naval Special Warfare Reserve Center in Bayonne. It's time we remind this city who actually holds the garrison."
