Chapter 13 - Box Eighty-Eight

The drive to Boston took four hours of tense, unbroken silence.
Rain lashed against the rusted hood of the pickup, washing away the mud from the canyon. Mateo had finally fallen asleep in the center of the cab, his small head resting heavily against Elena’s hip, his breathing rhythmic and peaceful despite the world collapsing around him.
They entered the financial district as the midday bells tolled twelve times from the old brick church towers. The towering glass and granite monoliths of corporate Boston cast long, cold shadows over the crowded streets.
Leo parked the plumber’s truck in an underground garage two blocks from the State Vault building—a fortress of neoclassical granite that had housed private safety deposits for the city’s oldest dynasties since the nineteenth century.
""You stay in the vehicle with Mateo,"" Leo said, checking his reflection in the rearview mirror. He was wearing the dry canvas work coat from the truck, his boots cleaned of creek mud, but the tension in his jaw was impossible to conceal.
""I'm coming with you, Leo,"" Elena said firmly. ""Box 88 belongs to the Vance family. The biometric lock on the vault requires a direct direct descendant's retinal scan. You won't even get past the inner gate without me.""
Leo looked down at Mateo, who stirred slightly in his sleep. ""We can't leave him here alone.""
Elena reached into the glove compartment, finding a baby carrier harness Martha had thoughtfully packed among the supplies. ""We don't leave him. We keep him where we can see him.""
Ten minutes later, the three of them walked through the brass revolving doors of the State Vault. The marble lobby was hushed, smelling of polished mahogany and old paper. Security guards in tailored blazers watched them with subtle suspicion as they crossed the checkerboard floor toward the vault concierge.
Elena presented the brass key stamped with 414 and leaned forward into the retinal scanning booth beside the private elevator.
A soft chime sounded. A green light flashed: IDENTITY CONFIRMED: ELENA VANCE-SANTOS.
The attendant bowed slightly, his tone shifting instantly from suspicion to deference. ""Welcome back, Mrs. Santos. Box Eighty-Eight has been requested only once today. Your brother arrived twenty minutes ago. He is currently waiting in Private Viewing Room C.""
Elena froze, her hand tightening around Leo’s arm like a vise.
Leo took a slow, deep breath, his knuckles whitening inside his coat pockets. ""Show us to Room C,"" he said quietly.
The attendant led them down a spiral marble staircase into the subterranean vault, past rows of gleaming steel doors, finally stopping before a heavy brass-paneled entrance.
""Take Mateo,"" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she unclipped the harness and handed the toddler to Leo. ""Whatever happens in there, don't let Thomas touch him.""
The attendant unlocked the heavy brass door and stepped aside.
Elena pushed the door open.

Sitting at the mahogany conference table inside, sipping coffee from a porcelain cup, was a man whose features were identical to Elena’s—except for the cold, hollow deadness in his eyes.
""You're late, little sister,"" Thomas Vance said, smiling without warmth. ""Julian told me you died in the river.""
