Chapter 8 - Bloodline

The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of helicopter rotors vibrated through the rusted corrugated ceiling of the mill, shaking loose decades of sawdust and dry rot.

""You brought them straight to us,"" Elena said, her voice dropping into an icy rage. She stepped forward, but Leo caught her elbow, keeping her anchored.

""Julian has had tracking software embedded in the coastal registry for two years,"" Arthur said, coughing violently into a silk handkerchief. When he pulled it away, flecks of crimson dotted the fabric. ""He bought the board, Elena. He bought my doctors. He poisoned me in Zurich to force the transfer. The only reason he hasn't liquidated everything is that my original will leaves the voting majority to your son. Julian needs Mateo's thumbprint on the digital notary terminal he carries.""

""And what do you need, Arthur?"" Leo demanded, taking a heavy step toward the wheelchair, the tire iron held loosely at his side. ""You didn't hide in this ditch out of paternal love.""

The old man’s mouth twisted into a bitter sneer. ""I need an heir who hasn't been corrupted by cowardice. Look at you, Santos. A dockworker. A laborer. You took my daughter and hid her in a clapboard shack. But that boy carries my blood. If he signs Julian's documents, Julian gets forty percent of the eastern seaboard's shipping routes. If Mateo signs my documents, the entire enterprise falls under a blind trust managed by an offshore council until he comes of age.""

""We don't want your empire, Father,"" Elena said. ""We never did.""

""It doesn't matter what you want!"" Arthur shouted, the effort bringing on another fit of agonizing coughing. ""The debt holders are Russian and Albanian syndicates, Elena! If the trust fails, they won't just take the real estate. They will erase anyone with the Vance name from the face of the earth! You think you can hide behind your picket fence? You think a quiet life exists for people like us?""

Above them, the spotlight of the helicopter washed across the broken skylights, blinding them in an intense, glaring cone of white light.

The megaphone on the chopper crackled to life, echoing off the iron girders of the mill.

""Arthur. Step away from the child. You have nowhere left to run.""

Julian wasn't alone. The heavy drone of multiple SUVs echoed from the gravel approach outside. The mill was completely surrounded.

Arthur reached beneath his blanket and pulled out an aluminum briefcase, slamming it down onto his lap. He flipped the latches open to reveal a glowing biometric tablet.

""Give me the boy's thumb,"" Arthur commanded, his voice frantic now. ""One press. That's all it takes. The trust locks, the private security fleet activates in Boston, and an extraction team drops in here within ten minutes!""

Mateo pulled back, trembling, his little fingers gripping Leo’s collar until his knuckles were white. ""No, Papa. Bad man.""

Leo looked at the dying billionaire, then at his terrified son, and then up at the roof where Julian's men were already preparing to breach.

""No,"" Leo said coldly.

Arthur stared in disbelief. ""What did you say?""

May you like

""He isn't your pawn, Arthur,"" Leo said.

Before the old man could react, Leo swung the heavy tire iron, smashing the glowing tablet into shattered pieces of plastic and lithium glass.
