Chapter 3 - The Sealed Vault

The two men who stepped out from the back of the sedan wore dark tactical jackets, their hands resting loosely near their waists. They didn't speak, but their positioning—spreading wide across the gravel path—cut off any clear exit to the main road.

""Step back into the house, Elena. Now,"" Leo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous calm. He bent down and hoisted Mateo into his left arm, keeping his right hand free and his body angled to shield both his wife and child.

""Let's not make an unfortunate scene in front of the boy, Mr. Santos,"" Julian said, taking another calm pace toward the porch steps. ""Your late father-in-law was a complicated man, but he was not foolish. The family conglomerate holds over forty percent of the coastal freight lines—the very lines that feed your dock. When he died, his board attempted to liquidate the assets. However, under the 1998 charter, control cannot be transferred without the physical signature of his sole surviving grandson's legal guardian.""

""We don't want his money,"" Elena said, stepping squarely beside Leo on the porch. Her jaw was set, though Leo could feel the subtle tremor running through her frame. ""We told him that when we left Boston. We made our own lives here. Leave us alone.""

""It isn't about the money, Mrs. Santos,"" Julian replied, his expression hardening into something far colder than formal courtesy. ""It's about the debts. Your father owed thirty million dollars to private creditors who do not accept bankruptcy filings. If the trust isn't activated in probate court by noon, those creditors take possession of the company's real estate holdings."" Julian paused, his eyes sweeping across their modest wooden home, the overgrown yard, and the gravel driveway. ""Including this parcel of land, which your father secretly bought out from under your landlord three years ago.""

Leo felt a cold knot tighten in his gut. He looked down at Elena, seeing the sheer horror dawning across her face. This house, the quiet life they had built nail by nail with their own hands—none of it was truly theirs.

""Papa,"" Mateo whispered into Leo's neck, his small voice trembling. He pushed the crumpled photograph into Leo's collar, pressing his cheek against Leo's jaw.

Leo shifted his gaze from Julian to the gravel driveway. The two men in tactical gear took another half-step forward.

""The car is warm,"" Julian offered, gesturing toward the idling sedan. ""We can settle this downtown at the registry before lunch. Or we can have the local sheriff deliver the eviction notice right now.""

Leo tightened his grip on Mateo. ""Give me ten minutes to pack my son's bag.""

Julian checked his gold watch. ""You have five.""

Leo turned Elena toward the front door, pushing her gently inside. But as he crossed the threshold, his eyes caught the reflection in the entryway mirror. The second man near the car wasn't looking at the house; he was pulling a silenced pistol from beneath his jacket.
