Chapter 14 - The Prodigal Son

""You faked your own death,"" Elena said, her voice shaking with a mixture of grief and pure revulsion. She remained standing in the doorway, refusing to take a seat at the polished mahogany table. Behind her, Leo filled the frame of the door, his broad shoulders blocking the hallway, holding Mateo firmly against his chest.

Thomas set his coffee cup down with a delicate, deliberate click. He wore an impeccably tailored navy suit, but his skin had the sallow, sickly pallor of a man who had spent years hiding in windowless penthouses and private clinics.

""I didn't fake anything, Elena,"" Thomas replied calmly, smoothing his silk tie. ""Father arranged it. He realized long before you did that our family’s empire was built on quicksand. The syndicates wanted collateral. Father gave them me—as a ghost. For eight years, I have lived under false passports in Vienna, managing the shell accounts while you played house with your dockworker in the woods.""

""Father didn't give you away,"" Elena said, taking a step forward, her eyes blazing. ""He locked you out because you were stealing from the employee pension trusts! He told me the truth before he died!""

Thomas’s calm veneer cracked, a flicker of pure hatred twisting his lips. ""The old man was senile! He built this dynasty on blood and exploitation, and then in his final years, he grew soft! He wanted to leave forty percent of the coastal supply chain to a toddler who can barely speak, while I—the rightful heir—was supposed to survive on offshore crumbs?""

Thomas stood up, leaning both hands on the table. ""Julian didn't betray Father. We acted together. The court in Boston already signed the emergency decree. The only thing missing from this box is the physical bearer bonds Arthur stole from the Zurich safe.""

Thomas pointed a finger at the open safety deposit box sitting in the center of the mahogany table. It was completely empty.

""Where are they, Elena?"" Thomas demanded, taking a step toward her. ""Where did the old man tell you to hide the bearer bonds?""

""She doesn't know,"" Leo’s deep voice resonated through the small room.

Thomas stopped, turning his gaze toward the doorway. His lip curled in disdain as he looked at Leo’s rough canvas coat, scuffed boots, and the quiet toddler clutched in his arm. ""And what would a dock laborer know about international bearer bonds?""

Leo stepped fully into the room, letting the heavy brass door click shut behind him. He reached inside Mateo's little olive sweatshirt pocket.

He didn't pull out a paper or a bond. He pulled out the small, brass key stamped 414.

""This key didn't belong to the station wagon,"" Leo said calmly. ""It was never for the car. Arthur gave this key to Martha fifteen years ago.""

Thomas stared at the brass key, his eyes suddenly widening in panic. ""Where did you get that?""

""Arthur didn't hide the bonds in Box Eighty-Eight,"" Leo said, taking another heavy step forward. ""He used this room as the bait to draw you out of hiding. Box 414 is located in the municipal vault across the street—under the dockworkers' union registry.""

Before Thomas could shout for the guards, the heavy brass door behind Leo burst open.

Julian stepped into the room, holding a suppressed pistol, his clothes soot-stained from the fire at the mill. ""Thank you for saving us the legwork, Santos,"" Julian whispered, leveling the barrel directly at Leo's chest.
