Chapter 1 - The Broken Rule

The quiet inside the penthouse was suffocating. Clara stood frozen against the floor-to-ceiling glass, the cold light of the morning skyline washing over her trembling silhouette. In her arms, nine-month-old Lily clutched Christian Vance’s navy silk tie, blissfully unaware of the catastrophe she had caused. Clara had worked for Vance Holdings’ residential properties for six months, living by one uncompromising rule: be invisible.
Christian Vance did not move from his crouch immediately. He was forty-two, carved of discipline, wealth, and ruthless control. His custom three-piece suit bore not a wrinkle, yet his long, calloused fingers lingered open in the empty space where the baby had just let go of his hand. When he rose to his full height, towering over her, Clara instinctively stepped back until her spine pressed flat against the glass wall. She braced for the inevitable words—call security, clear your locker, leave.
""Three months,"" Christian repeated, his voice low, steady, and entirely devoid of the fury she anticipated. ""You brought an infant onto the sixty-fourth floor five days a week, hid her in the staff corridors, and worked twelve-hour shifts.""
""Please, Mr. Vance,"" Clara choked out, tears finally breaking past her lashes. ""She never cried. I gave her teething biscuits, I kept the doors shut... Nobody saw her. I only did it because the shelter charges day fees I couldn't pay, and the streets—""
""I didn't ask why you hid her, Clara,"" he interrupted softly, closing the distance between them with measured steps. His grey eyes, usually cold enough to silence boardrooms, were fixed intently on the bruised purple shadows beneath her eyes. ""I asked who told you she wasn't allowed here.""
Clara swallowed hard, clutching Lily tighter. ""Mrs. Gable. The head of building management. She said if you ever saw a child in your private quarters, I’d be blacklisted from every agency in Manhattan.""
Christian’s jaw set into stone. He pulled his phone from his breast pocket, dialed a single digit, and held it to his ear without breaking Clara's gaze.
""Julian,"" Christian said calmly into the receiver. ""Terminate Mrs. Gable’s contract immediately. Have security escort her from the premises by noon. And call my private physician up to the penthouse. We have a guest.""

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving. ""Mr. Vance, you don't have to do this. I'm just the maid.""
Christian pocketed the phone, stepped close enough that she could smell cedarwood and rain on his coat, and looked down at the child resting against her shoulder. ""Not anymore,"" he said quietly. Then his phone buzzed again, lighting up with a private alert that drained the warmth from his face.
