Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The master guest suite was larger than the entire shared apartment Clara had fled in Chicago. Cream wool rugs cushioned every footstep, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed view of Central Park, golden under the autumn sun. But to Clara, the room felt like a fortress under siege.
Lily crawled across the soft carpet, happily babbling as she discovered a basket of plush toys that Julian, Christian’s intensely discreet majordomo, had produced within thirty minutes. Julian had arrived with infant formula, fresh clothes for both of them, and an unwavering, respectful silence.
""You need to eat, Miss Clara,"" Julian had said gently before leaving, nodding toward a tray of hot soup and artisan bread.
Clara hadn't touched it. She sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, her hands clasped tightly between her knees. Footsteps echoed in the outer hallway, heavy and deliberate. The double doors swung open, and Christian walked in, having shed his suit jacket and rolled his crisp blue shirtsleeves to his forearms.
""She has his chin,"" Christian said bluntly, standing in the doorway with his arms crossed, watching Lily play with a wooden block.
""She doesn't have his soul,"" Clara snapped defensively, her protective instincts overriding her fear of the billionaire. ""I ran the night I found out what Marcus really did for a living. I took nothing. Not a dime, not a car. I changed my name, paid cash for bus tickets, and lived in basements for nine months.""
""Marcus doesn't care about the money, Clara,"" Christian said, walking closer and crouching beside Lily. The baby reached up instantly, wrapping her tiny fingers around his silver wristwatch. Christian didn't pull away; his thumb gently brushed over the infant's soft wrist. ""He cares about leverage. My father’s will leaves forty percent of the Vance empire to the first legitimate blood heir. If Marcus produces a child, he takes control of our board of directors.""

""Lily isn't a bargaining chip!"" Clara cried out, rushing forward to scoop the baby into her arms. ""She is my daughter!""
""Then let me protect her,"" Christian said, rising to meet her panicked gaze. ""Because an hour ago, Marcus's attorney filed an emergency petition for custody in the state court.""
