Chapter 15 - Where She Belongs

By dawn, the rain had stopped, leaving Manhattan bathed in a pale, golden mist.
Marcus Kane’s executive penthouse was surrounded by three dozen federal agents and armed tactical police. Christian walked through the shattered glass entrance of the boardroom, flanked by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and two senior federal marshals.
Marcus sat at the head of the conference table, his wrists already bound in steel handcuffs. His face was pale, his smug composure finally stripped away by the mountain of forensic evidence, ballistics matches, and financial paper trails Christian’s team had handed directly to the Department of Justice overnight. The mercenaries had talked within an hour of their capture.
Marcus looked up, his eyes bloodshot with desperate rage. ""You think this is over, Christian? You think a judge won't throw out your fraudulent marriage? She's still a penniless maid who slept with me!""
Christian walked slowly up to the table, stopping just inches from his handcuffed brother. He leaned down, placing both hands flat on the polished mahogany.
""You never understood power, Marcus,"" Christian said, his voice quiet, cold, and entirely lethal. ""You thought power was taking things by force. Fear, blackmail, murder. But real power is having the loyalty of people who would die for you.""
Christian straightened his posture, looking down at Marcus with absolute disgust. ""Your assets have been frozen. The board voted at sunrise to strip you of your shares. You won't see the outside of a federal penitentiary for the next thirty years. And if you ever speak my wife’s name again, I will make sure those thirty years are spent in solitary confinement.""
Christian turned his back on Marcus, ignoring his brother’s frantic, screaming curses as the marshals hauled him toward the service elevator.
Two hours later, Christian stepped back into his own penthouse on the sixty-fourth floor.
The morning sun streamed through the panoramic windows, illuminating the gleaming marble floor. The smell of fresh coffee drifted from the kitchen. Sitting in the center of the living room rug was Lily, happily chewing on the corner of a colorful picture book.
Clara stood near the window, holding two mugs of tea. She wore a simple, elegant cream knit sweater, her hair falling softly over her shoulders. She turned as the front door closed, a hesitant, tender smile touching her lips.
Christian paused in the entryway, shedding his coat and unbuttoning his collar. The exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours was heavy in his limbs, but for the first time in five years, the suffocating shadow over his chest was gone.
He walked across the room, kneeling down beside Lily. The baby instantly recognized him, squealing with delight and tossing her book aside to reach for his silver watch. Christian let out a quiet, genuine laugh—a sound so rare and warm it made Clara’s breath catch. He gently lifted the little girl into his arms, letting her rest against his shoulder.
He stood up and walked to Clara, looking down at her with an intensity that made the rest of the world fade into white noise.
""It's done,"" Christian said softly. ""Marcus is gone. You and Lily are completely safe.""
Clara looked at him, her eyes searching his face. ""And the contract? The marriage?""
May you like
Christian set his tea mug down, his free hand reaching out to cradle the curve of her jaw. His fingers were warm, steady, and filled with an unspoken devotion that went far beyond legal maneuvers or protective duty.
""The contract was for the courts, Clara,"" Christian whispered, leaning in until his lips brushed softly against hers, sealing a promise far deeper than any legal parchment. ""You stay because you belong here. With me."""
