Chapter 10 - The Iron Siphon

The wind between the freight cars hit Marcus like a solid wall of ice.
He squeezed through the narrow maintenance hatch at the front of the car, his leather dress shoes slipping on the wet steel grating. Below him, the massive iron couplings groaned and shifted, a monstrous mechanical jaw grinding together with thousands of tons of crushing force. Any slip, any misstep, and he would be instantly pulled beneath the churning steel wheels.
The noise was deafening, a relentless roar of screeching metal and rushing air. Marcus’s fingers went numb within seconds. He clung to the cold steel ladder, his navy suit jacket whipping wildly in the gale.
He looked down. There, illuminated by the faint moonlight reflecting off the rails, ran the thick, reinforced rubber air brake hose, connected by a heavy cast-iron coupling known as the ""glad hand."" Above it sat the manual angle cock valve, a red lever caked in grease and grime.
Marcus took a deep, agonizing breath. He lowered himself onto the platform’s vibrating edge, his knees locking around the safety bar. He reached out with both hands, his body suspended over the lethal gap between the cars.
His fingertips brushed the frozen steel of the valve. It wouldn't budge. Decades of rust and road salt had fused the metal tight.
""Come on,"" Marcus grunted through clenched teeth, his muscles screaming under the strain. ""Come on!""
He shifted his weight, throwing his entire upper body into the lever. With a violent, bone-jarring snap, the valve gave way.
A deafening hiss of pressurized air erupted from the line, screaming into the night like an enraged serpent. Instantly, the massive brake shoes slammed against the spinning steel wheels along the entire length of the train. Sparks exploded beneath the carriages, lighting up the countryside in a blinding shower of orange and white fire.
The deceleration was violent. Marcus was thrown backward, his head slamming hard against the bulkhead of the boxcar. For a terrifying second, darkness threatened to pull him under, his grip failing as his body slid toward the gap.
A weathered, calloused hand caught the collar of his suit jacket with bruising force.
""I’ve got you! Climb, damn it!"" Frank roared, hauling Marcus backward through the hatch with desperate strength.
Marcus tumbled into the interior of the car just as the train screeched to a final, shuddering halt. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the ticking of cooling metal and the frantic breathing of the four passengers.
""Did we do it?"" Emily whispered from the corner, clutching Leo tightly.

Marcus sat up, rubbing the blood from a cut above his eye, his chest heaving. ""We did it. Now we run.""
Frank shoved the side door open. Outside, the black expanse of the Pine Creek forest stretched out beneath a canopy of indifferent stars. But as Marcus stepped toward the opening to lower his children, the beam of an infrared laser sight painted a bright, steady dot on the center of Frank’s chest.
