Chapter 13 - The Cold Truth

The heat from the blast washed over Marcus’s back, melting the snow on his collar before the biting winter wind rushed back in to claim the territory. He kept his body draped over Emily and Leo, absorbing the falling debris and burning wood splinters.
When the roar subsided into the crackle of burning diesel, Marcus lifted his head. The boxcar was a towering inferno, black smoke billowing into the night sky. There was no movement from the platform. Cross and Frank were gone, consumed by the iron pyre.
""Grandpa Frank?"" Emily whispered, her voice trembling in the freezing dark.
Marcus swallowed the burning lump in his throat, pulling her up. ""He saved us, Em. He gave us a path. Now we finish this.""
He carried Leo, while Emily held tightly to his belt. They walked through the dense woods for two agonizing miles, guided only by the distant glow of the state highway. Marcus’s suit was shredded, his fingers numb, but the adrenaline kept his blood boiling. Inside his breast pocket, pressed firmly against his ribs, was the black spiral notebook—singed at the edges, but intact.
They emerged near a deserted all-night truck stop on the perimeter of federal interstate territory. Fluorescent signs hummed in the freezing mist. Marcus didn't dare enter the main diner; his face had surely been broadcast across every screen in the region by now.
Instead, he bypassed the main building and approached an old payphone booth near the diesel pumps—a relic of an earlier era that had miraculously survived.
He didn't call the police. He didn't call his firm.
He dialed a private number he had memorized ten years ago: Special Agent Sarah Chen, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Public Corruption Division. She was the one agent Helen’s family could never buy, because Chen had spent five years trying to nail Helen’s late father for judicial extortion.
The phone rang four times.
""Chen,"" a sharp, alert voice answered.
""Agent Chen. This is Marcus Vance.""
A sharp intake of breath on the other end. ""Marcus? Turn yourself in. Every state trooper in three counties is authorized to use lethal force. Barnes claims you're armed and erratic.""
""Barnes is Helen’s payroll enforcer,"" Marcus said, his voice deadly calm, stripped of all panic. ""Listen to me very carefully, Sarah. Frank Rossi is dead. He died twenty minutes ago protecting the state’s key witness.""
""Frank?"" Chen’s voice cracked with sudden shock. ""Frank was with you?""
""I have the physical ledger,"" Marcus continued relentlessly. ""Wire routing numbers. Names of sixty-four children trafficked through Helen’s foundation. The forged state authorizations with Barnes’s personal signature on the transfer clearances. And I have Helen’s primary witness—my daughter.""
Silence stretched across the line, heavy with the realization of an enormous federal conspiracy cracking wide open.

""Where are you?"" Chen asked, her tone shifting instantly from skeptical law enforcement to focused predator.
""Mile marker 84, Route 9 truck stop,"" Marcus said. ""You have thirty minutes before Helen’s private contractors track the fire back to this road. Bring federal marshals. If Barnes’s deputies show up first, there’s going to be a massacre.""
