The cold drizzle of the late afternoon tapped against the cracked glass of the window, but inside the cramped studio apartment, the only light came from the blue glare of an old smartphone. Seven-year-old Lily sat on the edge of the frayed mattress, clutching the half-eaten cold-cut sandwich wrapped in greasy deli paper. Her four-year-old sister, Mia, chewed quietly, her tiny fingers covered in breadcrumbs, eyes heavy with the fatigue of a toddler who hadn’t eaten a warm meal in two days.
Lily stared at the screen resting against a chipped ceramic mug. Just three hours had passed since the kind-eyed cashier at the corner deli had filmed her. He had uploaded the clip to a local community page with a catchy caption about compassion and hard times. Lily didn't understand the algorithms or the metrics, but she understood the numbers multiplying faster than she could read them: ten thousand, fifty thousand, five hundred thousand.
The comments blurred past in a relentless waterfall of emojis and sympathy. ""Protect this angel,"" one wrote. ""Where are the parents?"" asked another. Lily chewed her bottom lip, feeling a strange knot tighten in the pit of her stomach. Their mother hadn't returned home in four days, leaving behind only an empty wallet and an unpaid rent notice taped to the door.

A sudden, sharp chime broke the apartment’s silence—a notification sound Lily had never heard before. A digital tip jar linked to the post had registered its first deposit: two hundred dollars from an anonymous user. Lily’s breath hitched. That was more money than she had ever seen in her life. It meant another week of milk, bread, and maybe even the pediatric asthma inhaler Mia desperately needed.
Before she could process the relief, the apartment doorknob rattled violently from the outside. A heavy fist slammed against the thin wood, rattling the chain lock. A gruff voice echoed through the hallway, demanding payment before dawn. Lily scrambled to turn off the phone, plunging the room into shadows as Mia began to whimper in the dark.
