Chapter 8 - Subterranean Secrets

""It's just a graze,"" Miller lied, pressing a handkerchief against his lower abdomen, his face turning an ashen grey in the sickly fluorescent light. ""The ricochet got me. Nothing to cry about.""

Mia began to whimper, clutching Lily’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. The tunnels smelled of stagnant water, rust, and ozone. Above them, the muffled thud of footsteps vibrated through the concrete ceiling. The hunters were already sweeping the upper levels.

""Listen to me, Lily,"" Miller whispered, pulling a small silver USB flash drive from his inner jacket pocket and pressing it into Lily's trembling palm. ""Your mother wasn't just hiding from an ex-husband. She was the head of security for Vanguard Media—the company running those viral tracking algorithms. She stole the ledger showing how they exploit runaways and missing kids for monetization campaigns.""

Lily stared at the tiny metal object. ""I don't understand... the video... Arthur was just being nice.""

""Arthur was paid fifty bucks by an algorithmic scout to film whoever looked the most desperate at that counter,"" Miller coughed, a thin line of blood appearing at the corner of his lip. ""They engineered the scene. You didn't wander into a deli, Lily. You were herded there.""

The revelation hit Lily like a physical blow. The warm counter, the kindly smile, the exact phrase—“maybe your followers can help you”—it hadn't been compassion. It had been a setup. A calculated digital trap designed to force her mother out of hiding.

Down the long tunnel, an iron door groaned open. Heavy combat boots echoed against the wet concrete floor, accompanied by the low growl of a trained tracking hound.
