Chapter 10 - The Architect of Silence

Elena unrolled a personnel file bearing an official seal. The face staring up from the paper belonged to Colonel Arthur Sterling—Thomas's former commanding officer and the man who had pinned the Silver Star to Thomas's uniform while he lay paralyzed in the military hospital. Sterling had been a mentor, a father figure who had visited Thomas during his longest months of physical therapy.
""Sterling signed the false casualty report,"" Elena said bitterly. ""He used our patrol as bait to cover the theft, then retired six months later to take a seat on the board of a private defense firm.""
Thomas looked down at his useless legs, a wave of cold, crystalline fury sweeping away any lingering doubt or despair. For three years, he had believed his disability was the tragic cost of duty. He had wept on sidewalks, felt broken in front of his child, and blamed himself for Marcus’s supposed death. It had all been an engineered lie to line the pockets of a traitor.
Suddenly, the floorboards rattled with a deep, low-frequency hum. Outside the cabin, a twin-rotor drone swept over the treetops, its thermal imaging camera painting an invisible grid across the wooden roof.

""They found the tracker on the van,"" Elena whispered, raising her rifle.
Thomas looked back toward the sleeping toddler. ""They aren't here for the van, Elena. They’re here to make sure neither of us ever speaks.""
