Inside the house, the silence felt heavier than usual. Thomas locked the deadbolt, double-checked the window latches, and drew the heavy living room curtains shut. He helped Leo with dinner, listening to the boy’s chatter about building block towers and toy fire engines, desperately clinging to the mundane reality of fatherhood.
Once Leo was tucked beneath his dinosaur blankets, Thomas sat by the boy's bed until the gentle rhythm of small breaths confirmed he was asleep. He leaned over, kissing Leo’s soft forehead. ""I'm going to protect you, no matter what,"" he whispered into the dim room.
