Chapter 15 - The Promise Kept

Two days later, the morning sun broke over a quiet hospital courtyard outside the military medical center in Bethesda. The headlines had already rocked the nation: Colonel Arthur Sterling and six defense contractors had been arrested for treason, fraud, and unlawful detainment. The stolen truth was finally restored, and the surviving soldiers were safe on American soil.
Thomas sat in a clean wheelchair under the shade of an arbor, wearing a freshly pressed uniform. His body ached, but the suffocating darkness that had weighed on his soul for years was completely gone.
Across the grassy courtyard, a door opened. Elena walked out, holding the hand of a little boy in a grey shirt and light blue sweatpants.
Leo froze for a split second, spotting his father under the trees. His eyes widened, a radiant beam spreading across his round face. ""Daddy!"" he cried, letting go of Elena’s hand and running across the lawn as fast as his small legs could carry him.
Thomas spun the wheels forward, meeting his son halfway. Leo jumped directly into his lap, wrapping his arms fiercely around his father's neck, burying his head against the crisp collar of the green uniform.
Thomas buried his face in his son's hair, breathing in the scent of home and safety. A single tear slipped down his cheek, but this time, it was born of profound relief. He leaned back slightly, looking down into Leo's bright hazel eyes.
For the first time in three long years, Captain Thomas Vance smiled—a wide, open, unbroken smile.

""I told you, Leo,"" Thomas whispered gently, holding his son tight against his heart. ""Daddy will always come back to you.""
Leo giggled, wiping his father's cheek with his small sleeve. ""You're smiling, Daddy. You're really smiling."""
