Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Door

The glass in the kitchen window shattered with a deafening crack. A flash-bang grenade rolled across the linoleum, detonating in a blinding eruption of white light and concussive sound. Thomas instinctively lowered his head, shielding his ears, but his mind was already screaming one single name: Leo.

Footsteps kicked through the broken shards in the kitchen. Elena drew a concealed pistol from beneath her windbreaker, firing two controlled shots down the narrow corridor. An answering volley of suppressed rifle rounds ripped through the drywall, throwing plaster dust into the air like dry snow.

""Get Leo!"" Thomas shouted over the ringing in his ears, driving his wheels forward with explosive force. He burst into the hallway, leaning low to avoid incoming fire. He rounded the corner into Leo's room just as the boy sat up in bed, screaming in pure terror from the noise.

""Daddy! Daddy!"" Leo sobbed, reaching out his small arms.

Thomas scooped the toddler into his lap with one arm, shielding the boy's tiny body with his torso while returning fire down the corridor with three rapid shots from his handgun. The intruder fell back, dragging an injured leg.

""Elena, back door!"" Thomas ordered. Elena kicked open the reinforced door leading to the attached garage, ushering them inside. But before Thomas could reach the ramp leading to his adapted van, the overhead garage door began to buckle under heavy sledgehammer blows from the outside.
