Chapter 10 - Federal Intervention

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

A voice amplified through a tactical megaphone tore through the rain. From the perimeter of the cemetery, high-intensity tactical spotlights flared to life, cutting through the misty darkness with blinding white brilliance. Half a dozen armored tactical vehicles rolled over the iron perimeter fence, their engines roaring as they surrounded the mausoleum.

Lily had done it. Clara’s burner phone and the recording had reached the Chicago field office. Clara’s months of clandestine correspondence with federal investigators had finally triggered an emergency tactical response.

"Arthur, fire!" Evelyn screamed, grabbing the barrel of the shotgun to force it toward Julian.

Arthur suddenly roared with a burst of primal strength nobody expected from the frail old man. He twisted violently, throwing his elbow backward directly into Evelyn’s face. The heavy blow caught her across the nose, shattering cartilage and sending her sprawling onto the muddy gravel, screaming in agony.

The shotgun dropped from Arthur’s hands, clattering harmlessly against the stone steps. Arthur collapsed to his knees, burying his face in his hands, weeping openly in the torrential downpour.

"DOWN ON THE GROUND! ALL OF YOU!"

Dozens of federal agents in black body armor surged into the mausoleum plaza, assault rifles raised. The two laborers inside the vault immediately threw their hands up, falling flat on their stomachs beside the concrete mixer.

Julian slowly bent down and laid his sidearm on the wet flagstones, raising his hands into the blinding glare of the spotlights.

"I’m Julian Blackwood," he called out loudly. "The child is safe behind the third mausoleum to the west! My wife’s body is in the casket—she was murdered with potassium chloride and thallium!"

An agent stepped forward, securing Julian’s wrists with zip-ties as standard procedure, while two others rushed past them into the trees to retrieve Lily.

Evelyn was hauled to her feet by two female agents. Blood streamed freely from her broken nose, smearing across her designer coat, her styled hair plastered across her face like drowned reeds. Even bound in steel cuffs, her eyes burned with pure malice.

"You have nothing!" Evelyn spat toward the lead agent, her voice venomous. "This is private family property! You have no warrant!"

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped into the light, holding up a badge and a sealed leather folder.

"Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes and Homicide Division," the man said calmly. "We’ve had a federal warrant for your arrest for seventy-two hours, Mrs. Blackwood. Clara Blackwood sent us your complete off-shore ledger three days ago. We were waiting for your shipment of bearer bonds to clear customs. We just heard the recording your granddaughter played over the 911 dispatch."

Evelyn froze. For the first time, Julian saw genuine terror pierce his mother's iron facade.

"Daddy!"

Lily’s voice cut through the commotion. An agent was carrying her toward the steps, wrapped in a heavy tactical jacket. Julian twisted out of the agent's grip, dropping to his knees on the wet grass as Lily leaped into his arms.

He held her against his chest, both of them sobbing into the cold rain.

"She's gone, Daddy," Lily whispered into his neck. "Mommy is really gone."

"I know, baby," Julian wept, kissing her wet curls. "I know. But they can’t hurt us anymore. It’s over."

As the federal medics rushed toward Arthur to administer chelating agents for his poisoning, Special Agent Vance crouched beside Julian, his expression grim.

"Mr. Blackwood," Vance said quietly. "I need you to look at something before we move the casket."
