Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Cabinet

The floorboards groaned above Julian as the guards moved away, their flashlight beams sweeping toward the northern wing. Julian waited until the heavy vibrations ceased, then pulled Lily gently to her feet.

"We need to go down," he whispered into her ear. "To the old wine cellar. There’s an exit into the greenhouse."

They crept along the narrow wooden catwalk inside the wall. Julian knew the blueprint by heart, but every creak of the aging timber sounded like a gunshot in his ears. Lily stayed remarkably silent, biting her lower lip, holding the disemboweled doll tightly under her arm.

They reached a steep wooden ladder leading down into the subterranean levels of the estate. Julian climbed down backward, guiding Lily’s little feet rung by rung until they touched the damp brick floor of the servant passages beneath the kitchen pantry.

Here, the smell of damp earth and wine mingled with something sharp and chemical. Julian noticed a faint light spilling from the old estate pharmacy—a room his father had used decades ago to mix botanical pesticides and herbal remedies.

Julian crept toward the cracked wooden door. Peering through the hinge gap, he saw Dr. Finch, the family’s private physician, standing over a counter. Finch was tossing prescription bottles and paper files into a metal wastebasket, pouring lighter fluid over them.

On the table sat a glass vial labeled with a handwritten tag: Thallium Sulfate. Beside it sat another bottle marked Potassium Chloride—an agent that mimics a natural heart attack by inducing fatal arrhythmia, leaving virtually no trace in standard autopsies.

Julian’s vision blurred with red rage. Clara hadn't just died; she had been systematically, agonizingly terminated by the people who smiled at her across the dining table every Sunday.

"Finch," Julian muttered under his breath.

He knew he couldn't take on Finch and the guards together, but Finch held the only set of keys that unlocked the heavy iron grates leading out to the greenhouse tunnels.

Julian found a rusted iron pipe resting against the stone foundation. Telling Lily to stay hidden behind an empty wine barrel, he stepped out into the corridor.

He intentionally kicked an empty bottle. It clattered across the flagstones.

Dr. Finch froze, whipping around with a lighter in his hand. "Who's there? Marcus?"

Julian lunged into the doorway, swinging the iron pipe. Finch ducked with surprising agility, diving behind the wooden table. The pipe smashed into the glass counter, shattering bottles of tincture and sending chemical vapors hissing into the air.

Finch scrambled for a scalpel on the tray, slashing wildly. The blade cut Julian across his left forearm, slicing cleanly through his suit sleeve and skin. Julian grunted, ignoring the flare of pain, and tackled the older man into the metal wastebasket.

They crashed to the floor, rolling among broken glass and spilled lighter fluid. Finch clawed at Julian’s throat, his eyes wide with mania. "You should have stayed away, Julian! Your mother will burn this entire county down before she lets you expose her!"

Julian locked his hands around Finch’s wrists and drove his knee hard into the doctor’s ribs. Finch gasped, dropping the scalpel. Julian pinned him to the cold bricks, pressing the iron pipe against the man's throat until his eyes bulged.

"Where are the keys to the greenhouse gate?" Julian growled, blood dripping from his arm onto Finch’s white coat.

Finch choked, his hand feebly patting his left pocket. Julian snatched the heavy brass ring of keys.

Just as Julian prepared to knock Finch unconscious to ensure their escape, a small, terrified gasp came from the hallway.

Julian looked up. Lily was no longer behind the barrel.

Standing in the corridor doorway was Evelyn, flanked by two armed men in tactical gear. One of them held Lily by the collar of her dress, her feet dangling inches off the ground.
