Chapter 12 - The Coma Protocol

"She’s alive," Julian whispered, his fingers crushing the edges of the medical form. The words echoed in his skull like a deafening bell. "Clara is alive!"
Agent Vance snatched the document, scanning the clinical details under the tactical flashlight. His jaw tightened. "St. Jude Rest Home. It’s an unlicensed psychiatric asylum owned through three layers of shell corporations. Officially, it’s a hospice for wealthy patients with severe dementia. Unofficially... it’s where families like yours bury their living secrets."
"The potassium chloride," Julian realized aloud, the pieces falling into place with sickening clarity. "Dr. Finch didn't give her a fatal dose. He gave her a neuromuscular paralytic combined with high-dose barbiturates. It simulates brain death. It drops the heart rate to near zero."
"A clinical state of suspended animation," Vance nodded grimly. "To any local coroner without a toxicological workup, she would appear entirely dead. Evelyn held the wake with an empty casket to convince you and the family she was gone, while shipping her body upstate to be locked away indefinitely."
"Why?" Julian demanded. "Why keep her alive at all?"
"Because Clara changed the master access keys to the off-shore accounts before she was captured," Vance explained, pulling out his satellite radio. "Evelyn couldn't access the two hundred million dollars without Clara's biometric thumbprint and retina scan. If Clara died, the money was permanently locked in the Swiss vaults. Evelyn needed her alive—barely alive—until she could force the biometric transfers."
Julian felt a surge of violent urgency tear through his exhaustion. He looked at the timestamp on the intake sheet.
Intake Date: Yesterday, 4:00 PM. Biometric clearance window: 36 hours.
"They have less than twelve hours before the Swiss banking system locks the authorization," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Vance. "Once Evelyn’s associates realize she’s been arrested, what happens to Clara?"
Vance’s face hardened into grim certainty. "The protocol for an unrecoverable asset at St. Jude is complete disposal. They will terminate life support and incinerate the facility records."
Vance immediately turned to his radio, barking orders to deploy a federal tactical team to the Adirondacks. But through the radio came a crackle of static, followed by the frantic voice of a dispatcher.

"Command, be advised: A major mudslide has taken out Route 9 North near the mountain pass. State troopers report all federal convoys are blocked. Heavy road equipment won't clear the pass for at least four hours."
"We don't have four hours," Julian said, his voice dropping into absolute resolve. He looked toward the private helipad behind the Blackwood stables. "The family helicopter is sitting on the ridge. And I have the flight codes."
