BLOOD AND COLD ASHES / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - The Secret Corridor

A sharp crack shattered the heavy air of the foyer. The bullet tore through the satin floral arrangement sitting atop Clara’s casket, showering Julian and Lily in torn white carnations and splintered wood.

Julian didn't hesitate. Gripping Lily tightly against his ribs with one arm, he hurled the bronze candelabra straight into the face of the second guard. The man stumbled backward, his hand flying to his broken nose, blood spraying across his crisp white collar.

"Stop them! Don't let him reach the study!" Evelyn screeched, her voice losing every trace of high-society composure.

Julian bolted toward the back of the foyer, veering left past the towering grandfather clock. Growing up in Blackwood Manor, he knew every architectural secret the old house kept. His ancestors had built smuggler passages during the Prohibition era, hidden between the double-thick plaster walls.

He slammed his shoulder against the carved wainscoting behind the staircase. A panel clicked, opening inward with a soft pneumatic hiss. Julian shoved Lily through the narrow gap and slipped in after her, pulling the oak panel shut just as heavy boots pounded outside.

In the pitch-black corridor, the roar of the mansion vanished, muffled by feet of solid masonry. The air was stale, thick with spiderwebs and dry dust.

"Daddy," Lily whimpered, her hands trembling violently against his chest. "I’m scared."

"I know, baby. I know," Julian whispered, sinking to his knees on the wooden boards. He pressed his face against her hair, his own heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I’ve got you. I won’t let them touch you."

He quickly checked her over in the dark, feeling for any injuries. She was unharmed, but she was shivering uncontrollably.

"Lily, where is the blue ribbon?" he asked, keeping his voice a low, steady rumble. "You mentioned Clara gave you something."

Lily reached inside the hollow lining of her cloth doll. The back of the toy was held together by uneven stitches. Her small fingers pulled away the cotton stuffing and withdrew a tiny silver metallic cylinder wrapped securely in a fraying strip of blue velvet.

Julian took it. It was Clara’s high-grade digital voice recorder. He pressed the playback button.

Clara’s voice, raspy and strangled with desperate tears, filled the narrow crawlspace:

"Julian... if you hear this, she found out about the offshore accounts. The Blackwood foundation isn't bankrupt... Evelyn stole two hundred million dollars... she's poisoning Arthur with thallium... Julian, she’s coming down the hall. She has Dr. Finch with her... God, please, protect our daughter—"

The recording cut abruptly into the sound of breaking glass and a woman’s muffled scream.

Before Julian could process the horror, a flashlight beam sliced through the gaps in the ceiling planks above them. Heavy footfalls paused right over their heads.

"Check the basement sub-levels," a harsh voice barked from above. "The lady says neither of them leaves this house alive."
