Chapter 1 - The Closed Doors

The polished brass elevator groaned as it ascended, leaving the muffled fury of Marcus pounding against the metal outside. Inside the narrow, mahogany-lined cabin, the air felt compressed, heavy with the sharp scent of cedarwood, expensive cologne, and iron. Clara pressed her back against the mirrored wall, her knuckles white as she gripped the fabric of her black apron. Her breath caught in her throat, her chest heaving against the stiff cotton of her uniform.
Beside her, the man had not moved an inch. He stood like a carved pillar of black granite. Even in the dim, golden sconce light of the lift, the ink crawling over his throat and chest seemed alive—dark, sinuous coils of mythical beasts and sacred geometry disappearing under his open black shirt.
His hand remained holding the leather book open. He didn’t raise his voice; he didn’t need to. "I asked you a question," he said. The timbre was low, vibrating through the small carriage. "Why is your name written in this book?"
Clara blinked, looking down at the yellowed page under his thick, tattooed thumb. Written in elegant, copperplate cursive was her full name: Clara Linnea Vance. Next to it were seven digits, slashed across with a clean diagonal stroke of crimson ink.
"I don't know," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I swear to God, I’ve never seen that book. I’m just a banquet server. I started here three weeks ago."

"People who end up in this ledger don't get there by mistake," he replied softly, closing the notebook with a muffled snap. He pocketed it inside his bespoke jacket. "My name is Silas Croft. The man chasing you—Marcus Drake—is not just a persistent ex-boyfriend. He is a debt collector for the Syndicate. Which means either you stole something priceless, or someone put a bounty on your head that he intends to collect."
Before Clara could form words to deny it, the elevator shuddered violently. The ceiling light flickered once, twice, and died completely, plunging the carriage into suffocating blackness as the mechanical cables above snapped with a terrifying, metallic shriek.
