Chapter 13 - The Vault of Shadows

"Step forward, Clara," Moretti purred through the speaker. "Place your thumb on the scanner beside the glass. Give me the master ledger's clearance codes, and I will let your father live out his remaining days in a quiet villa in Greece."

David shook his head violently, shouting through his gag.

"He’s lying," Silas muttered under his breath, his back against the wall, eyes calculating angles. "The moment the vault opens, the purge protocol activates. Moretti isn't going to Greece. He's liquidating every trace of the old ledger."

"Then what do we do?" Clara whispered, her panic rising as the sound of armed enforcers marching echoed down the adjacent maintenance ducts.

"We rewrite the contract," Silas replied.

Silas reached into his vest, pulling out the small black leather notebook from the hotel elevator. He flipped to the very last page, where an intricate barcode was stamped into the binding. He thrust the notebook into Clara’s hands.

"The scanner isn't just biometric," Silas whispered rapidly. "Your father designed it to take a priority override. Press your bloodied hand against this barcode and scan it on the reader. It triggers the failsafe."

"What does the failsafe do?" Clara asked, trembling.

Silas smiled—a cold, razor-sharp expression that sent shivers down her spine. "It broadcasts every crime Arthur Moretti has ever committed to every intelligence agency on earth."
