Chapter 14 - The Final Ledger

"Clara, do it now, or I put a bullet in your father's knee!" Moretti barked through the speaker. Inside the glass room, a guard pressed the barrel of a pistol against David Vance's joint.

Clara didn't hesitate. She dragged the serrated edge of Silas's tactical knife lightly across her palm. Blood welled up, bright and red. She slammed her bleeding hand over the barcode on the back of the ledger, then lunged forward, pressing the smeared book against the vault's glass optical scanner.

The control console flashed an immediate, blinding cyan.

A robotic voice echoed through the compound's PA system: Master Key Identified. Executive override accepted. Data purge aborted. Worldwide release initiating.

Moretti’s face drained of all color. "No! Kill them! Kill them all!"

Before the guards could pull their triggers, Silas detonated the breach charges he had covertly placed along the frame of the reinforced glass during Moretti's speech.

The glass wall exploded into millions of crystallized fragments. Silas tore through the breach like a demon. He disarmed the first guard, firing the man's own weapon through the armor of the second. The third guard lunged toward David; Silas threw his blade end-over-end, burying it hilt-deep into the man's chest.

Moretti scrambled backward toward the rear escape hatch, pulling a gold-plated revolver from his waistband. He aimed straight at Clara.

Silas threw his entire body across the space, intercepting the shot.
