Chapter 15 - The Unwritten Page

The bullet tore through Silas's side, but he didn't stop. He crossed the distance in a single leap, slamming Moretti against the steel safe deposit boxes. The billionaire’s gun clattered across the floor.

Silas gripped Moretti by the throat, hoisting him off his feet. "Your name wasn't in the ledger, Arthur," Silas whispered, his voice ragged with blood and fury. "Because I save the worst names for my memory."

With a sickening twist, Silas ended the reign of the House of Moretti.

Silence descended upon the broken vault, broken only by the wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers echoing from the streets above. The automated leak had worked; within minutes, every federal authority in the nation was converging on the Citadel.

Clara rushed to her father, slicing through his zip-ties. David pulled his daughter into a crushing, tear-stained embrace. "Clara... my sweet girl... I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

"It's over, Dad," she sobbed, holding him tightly. "It's over."

Behind them, a soft thud drew their attention. Silas slumped against the vault wall, sliding down to sit on the blood-spattered concrete, his hand clutching his side.

Clara rushed to him, tearing her apron to press against his wound. "Silas! Stay with me! You're bleeding out!"

Silas gently caught her hand, stopping her. His breathing was shallow, his eyes slowly losing their hardened edge, showing a profound, exhausted peace. With trembling fingers, he reached into his torn pocket and pulled out the small black ledger.

He flipped it open to page seven, where Clara's name was written. With his own blood, he drew a firm line through her name, wiping the debt forever clean.

"You're free, Clara," he whispered, coughing lightly. "Both of you. Take the service tunnel beneath the safe. It leads straight out to the river ferry."

"I'm not leaving you," Clara cried, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks.

Silas offered a faint, fleeting smile. "I don't belong in the daylight, little bird. I belong to the ledger."

Heavy footsteps echoed from the blast doors—tactical police units breaching the upper perimeter, shouting commands. David pulled Clara toward the open escape hatch, pleading with her to move.

Clara took one last look at Silas Croft. He sat tall against the steel vault, reloading his sidearm, waiting for whatever came through that door with absolute, unwavering calm.

As Clara and her father descended into the dark escape tunnel, the vault door burst open behind them, followed by the deafening crack of a single, final gunshot.
