Chapter 5 - An Eye for a Nail

Javier gasped for air, glass shards slicing into the back of his neck as Alexander leaned over him, his face an emotionless mask of pure malice. The scent of spilled bourbon and copper filled the air.
""You watched her bleed,"" Alexander whispered, his voice quiet enough to carry only between the two of them. ""You closed the door while an old monster broke my child’s bones.""
""Please..."" Javier choked, blood trickling from his nose as Alexander’s thumb pressed into his carotid artery. ""I love her... I made a mistake...""
""A mistake is failing a trade margin,"" Alexander said, gripping Javier's right wrist and pinning it hard to the mahogany armrest. ""Beating Clara for real estate deeds is a death sentence.""
With a swift, practiced movement, Alexander reached into his overcoat, produced a heavy antique letter opener with a pointed steel blade, and brought it down through the wood directly between Javier’s spread fingers, embedding it three inches deep. Javier shrieked, wetting himself in pure panic.
""Consider those fingers your only warning,"" Alexander said, releasing Javier’s neck. ""You have exactly two hours to bring your mother to my residence to surrender every forged deed.""
""She won't come!"" Javier sobbed, clutching his pinned hand against the splintered armrest. ""She has private contractors at the estate! She already notified the harbor! The shipments are moving!""
Donald stepped closer, checking his phone. ""Sir. We have a situation. A convoy just pulled up outside the Vance penthouse tower.""

Alexander spun around, his pupils contracting into pinpricks of pure venom. Madeline Robas hadn't stayed at her compound. She had gone straight for Clara.
Alexander lunged forward, grabbing Javier by the collar and hoisting him up like a ragdoll. ""Then you will ride with me to watch your mother burn.""
