Chapter 1 - The Circle of Silence

The echo of Coach Frank Miller’s command hung over the mat like smoke after gunfire. Around the cage perimeter, seven junior fighters stood frozen, their mouths slightly agape. Nobody shuffled; nobody breathed. On the canvas, Maya leaned heavily against her good side, her right hand clamped over her bruised collarbone. Her breath wheezed through clenched teeth, tears cutting faint lines through sweat.
Marcus stood towering over her, his chest heaving inside the tight olive rashguard. The cocky half-smile still lingered at the edge of his lips, but his pupils dilated as Frank stepped across the boundary line. Frank did not yell again. He didn’t need to. When a veteran who had fought thirty bare-knuckle bouts across two continents lowers his voice, the room dies down naturally.
Frank pressed both palms squarely against Marcus’s sternum. The impact wasn’t a blow, but a statement of solid mass and iron discipline. Marcus yielded half a step, heels catching the seam of the mat.
""You tapped her two seconds before you loosened the crank,"" Frank said. His breath smelled of stale black coffee and winter mint. ""In this room, the tap is sacred. You disregard the tap, you disregard the code.""
Marcus rolled his neck, his braided twists swinging with defiant rhythm. ""It’s high-level prep, Frank. Regionals are four weeks out. She hesitated on the roll. If she’s gonna step under the lights, she has to expect friction.""
""She’s a purple belt sparring an active title contender,"" Frank retorted, eyes narrowing into cold slits. ""You weren't testing friction. You were feeding your ego.""
Frank reached behind his back, fingers hooking into the zipper of his black Academy jacket. He pulled it downward in one deliberate, grinding stroke. The nylon parted to reveal weathered forearms scored with faded surgical scars—remnants of elbow reconstructions from a career fought long before safety commissions intervened.
""Maya, get ice on that shoulder and sit by the cage door,"" Frank commanded without breaking eye contact with Marcus.
Maya scrambled up clumsily, nodding once, fear and gratitude tangled on her face. As the cage gate clicked shut behind her, Frank kicked off his wrestling shoes, stepping barefoot onto the center circle.
""You wanted elite resistance,"" Frank said, raising his hands into an old-school Philly shell. ""Come take it.""

Marcus’s smirk vanished, replaced by an arrogant sneer. He bounced onto the balls of his feet, muscles coiling across his broad shoulders. He feigned a jab, then suddenly lunged forward with a flying knee that had ended three professional fights in the first round.
Frank didn't flinch. He simply shifted six inches to his left, yet in that split second of airborne vulnerability, Frank’s gaze caught something metallic slipping from Marcus’s taped wrist wrap.
