Chapter 3 - The Contract on the Mat

The cold draft from the alleyway swept across the sweat-slicked gym, chilling the blood on Frank’s cheek. The three men entering did not look like fight enthusiasts. They wore tailored charcoal overcoats over pristine shirts, completely out of place against the scuffed gym gear and peeling vinyl posters.
The man in the center stepped forward. He was slim, with silver-threaded hair and cold gray eyes behind rimless glasses. In his left hand, he carried a heavy, monogrammed leather briefcase.
""That's enough of the unsanctioned sparring, gentlemen,"" the silver-haired man said, his voice clipped and European. ""Marcus, you’re violating clause 4.2 of your exclusive training rider. If you break a hand in an unregistered basement grudge match, your promotional debut in Vegas is void.""
Marcus rolled off the mat immediately, peeling the illicit tape from his wrist with frantic, guilty motions, tucking the scrap deep inside the waistband of his shorts. He wouldn't meet Frank’s eyes.
""Viktor,"" Marcus mumbled, catching his breath. ""We were just... working technique.""
""Technique does not require lacerations,"" Viktor replied, glancing at Frank’s bleeding cheek with mild distaste. He stepped directly onto the mat without removing his expensive leather oxfords—a brazen sign of disrespect that caused the surrounding fighters to murmur in anger.
Frank stood tall, using the back of his thumb to wipe the blood from his jawline. ""Off the canvas. Now.""
Viktor halted, raising an eyebrow with theatrical amusement. ""Frank Miller. Former light heavyweight legend. It is a genuine pleasure. I represent Apex Global Combat. We hold the paper on this facility's outstanding mezzanine mortgage.""
The room went completely silent. Frank felt a tight knot twist in his stomach. Two years ago, to expand the training facilities and buy new rehabilitation gear for the junior team, he had restructured the gym's debt through what he thought was an independent athletic fund.
Viktor snapped his fingers. His assistant opened the briefcase and presented an official foreclosure notice stamped with red legal seals.
""Your balloon payment was due sixty days ago, Frank,"" Viktor stated plainly. ""Marcus signed an exclusive management contract with Apex last night. We own his contract, and by Friday morning, we will own this building. Marcus trains in our private facility. This gym becomes a commercial storage unit.""
Frank glanced at Marcus. The young fighter looked away, unable to sustain the gaze of the coach who had pulled him off the juvenile yard four years ago and taught him how to punch without killing.
""You sold the gym out?"" Frank asked, his tone dead flat.
Marcus clenched his fists. ""They offered me a half-million signing bonus, Coach. What was I supposed to do? Wait around here until my prime fades for five-hundred-dollar local cards?""
Frank stepped forward, his bleeding cheek throbbing with steady heat. ""Get out of my gym. Both of you.""
Viktor smiled thinly, tucking the legal papers back into the case. ""We leave for now. But you have seventy-two hours, Frank. Pay the three hundred thousand dollars, or Marcus fights for our championship while the demolition crew knocks your front door down.""

As Viktor turned toward the door, Marcus lingered for a split second, whispering barely loud enough for Frank to hear.
""You should've let them pay you off years ago, old man. You can't fight the house.""
