Chapter 15 - The New Breed

Frank walked slowly toward the front door, his hand instinctively dropping into his jacket pocket. Across the asphalt, the black sedan sat with its engine purring, an ominous silhouette against the autumn sun.
The rear door opened. A woman stepped out onto the pavement.
She was in her late thirties, tall, athletic, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit and dark Italian sunglasses. She didn't look like Viktor’s sleazy enforcers. She carried herself with the poise of a military officer and the casual grace of a retired champion.
She walked straight up the steps of Miller Academy, the click of her heels sharp against the concrete. She pushed the glass door open, the brass bell chiming softly above her head.
Frank stood in the center aisle, arms crossed over his chest. ""If you're with Apex, you're trespassing. The debt is clear.""
The woman stopped, taking off her sunglasses to reveal striking, amber-colored eyes that assessed the gym with razor-sharp precision.
""I am not with Apex, Frank,"" she said, her voice rich, steady, and devoid of Viktor’s oily arrogance. ""My name is Elena Cole. I am the Director of Operations for the World Combat League.""
Frank’s eyebrows raised slightly. The WCL was the gold standard—a legitimate, highly regulated international promotion that avoided reality-TV drama and focused entirely on purist martial arts excellence.
""What does the WCL want with an old gym in the harbor district?"" Frank asked.
""We don't want your gym, Mr. Miller,"" Elena replied, stepping closer and glancing at the heavy bag Frank had battered just forty-eight hours ago. ""We watched the video from Hector's pit last night.""
Frank felt a momentary chill. ""Those fights aren't supposed to be broadcast.""
""Nothing stays hidden in the digital era,"" Elena said, reaching into her leather portfolio and pulling out a glossy promotional contract. ""The underground showed us two things: First, that Marcus Vance has world-class potential that was nearly ruined by toxic management. And second... that the old guard still knows how to teach.""
She walked to the ring apron and laid the contract down flat.
""The WCL is launching a new developmental division. We want Miller Academy as our primary regional training center. We fund your equipment, we cover your fighters’ medical insurance, and we provide guaranteed roster spots for your top athletes.""
Frank stared at the paper. It was everything he had spent twenty years bleeding for: legitimate security, dignity for his fighters, and complete operational independence.
""What's the catch?"" Frank asked, his instincts always guarded.
Elena looked toward the back of the gym, where Marcus was carrying a bucket of water and Maya was adjusting her sling.
""The catch is Marcus,"" Elena said. ""We want him on our roster for a comeback card in Tokyo next year. But under one absolute, non-negotiable condition.""
""Which is?""
Elena turned back to Frank, her expression dead serious. ""You have to be in his corner. And before he steps onto that international stage... you must fight one exhibition bout on the same card to validate the academy’s banner.""
Frank froze. The silence in the gym returned, heavy and profound. His aching ribs, his bruised knuckles, and his fifty-year-old knees all screamed out in protest against the mere thought of stepping under the bright stadium lights one more time.
Maya walked up beside him, reading the header on the contract with wide eyes. Marcus stopped in the hallway, holding the mop, holding his breath.

Frank looked down at his taped hands, then at the young fighters standing around him, waiting for his answer.
""Tokyo,"" Frank murmured, the ghost of an old, dangerous smile finally returning to his face. ""I always did like fighting in Tokyo."""
