Chapter 2 - The Edge of Reason

The blur of Marcus’s knee missed Frank’s temple by an inch, the rush of displaced air snapping the coach’s collar. Before Marcus touched the canvas, Frank pivoted smoothly, planting his rear foot and driving an open-palm counter straight under Marcus’s floating ribs.
Marcus gasped as oxygen deserted his lungs. He stumbled back, catching himself against the chain-link fence. The cage rattled with a deafening metallic shudder that vibrated through every spectator’s spine.
""Keep your hands up,"" Frank ordered, circling with deliberate, measured strides. ""Speed means nothing without balance. You threw your hips away.""
Marcus didn't answer with words. His pride had taken a direct hit before the entire camp. His jaw tightened until the muscles bulged against his skin. Instead of resetting into a orthodox stance, he surged forward with a blind three-punch combination: a hard left hook, an overhand right meant to decapitate, and an inside leg kick.
Frank slipped the hook, rolled under the overhand right with the practiced grace of a ghost, and checked the kick with an iron shin. The sound of shin meeting shin cracked across the gym like dry cedar snapping in winter. Marcus winced, but his adrenaline muted the agony.
In the clinch that immediately followed, Marcus drove Frank backward into the fence. The younger man’s youth and explosive torque pinned the older coach against the mesh. Their faces were inches apart, sweat dripping between them.
""You're old, Frank,"" Marcus muttered through clenched mouthguard. ""The gym’s name is yours, but the sponsors came for me.""
""This place isn't built on money, Marcus,"" Frank whispered back, his grip sliding behind Marcus’s neck into a tight Thai plum. ""It’s built on respect.""
Frank levered his hips, executing a sweeping outside trip that dumped Marcus violently onto his back. But as Frank dropped to pass into side control, Marcus's right hand flashed upward in an awkward, jagged arc.
A sharp, stinging burn erupted across Frank’s cheekbone. A thin line of crimson bloomed instantly, trickling down his jaw. It wasn't the blunt trauma of a knuckle. It was a precise, surgical slice.
Frank pulled back, touching his bleeding face. He stared down at Marcus’s taped palm. Tucked beneath the outer layer of cloth was a modified razor strip—illegal, vicious, and intentional.

""Where did you get that?"" Frank’s voice turned deathly quiet.
Before Marcus could answer, the rear steel exit of the gym was kicked open with a booming crash, framing three men in dark suits holding leather portfolios.
