BLOODLINE OF ASHES AND IRON / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Mother's Confession

The video on the tiny, cracked screen flickered with digital noise, the resolution degraded by multiple layers of military-grade encryption.

Helena’s face appeared in the frame.

She looked nothing like the polished, elegant socialite Eleanor had paraded through New York society, nor did she resemble the ruthless corporate spy Dr. Sterling had described. Her blond hair was hacked short, dark circles hollowed her cheeks, and her lip was split. She was sitting in a dimly lit concrete basement, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket, a small infant wrapped in blankets sleeping against her chest.

Lily.

"Alexander," Helena’s voice whispered through the van’s roaring engine noise. Her voice trembled, but beneath the fear was a maternal ferocity that Alexander recognized instantly. "If you are watching this, it means Nathaniel and Eleanor finally executed their protocol. It means they told you I was a spy. They told you Lily is an experiment."

Alexander leaned closer, his thumb resting against the glass over her digital image.

"They lied to you, Alexander. They lied to make you hesitate."

Helena drew a ragged breath on the screen, looking down at the sleeping child in her arms.

"Apex didn't create Lily. I was their lead geneticist, yes. But when I realized they were developing a synthetic neuro-inhibitor designed to permanently lobotomize cognitive independence in corporate populations... I destroyed the research. I wiped the servers in Zurich. Lily is not a prototype, Alexander. Lily is your flesh and blood. She is our daughter."

A heavy tear tracked through the dust on Helena’s pixelated cheek.

"I used their own synthetic vector to hide the decryption keys to their entire international black ledger inside Lily’s non-coding DNA. The ledger contains the bank accounts, the political contracts, the names of every judge and general on the Apex payroll across thirty nations. They don't want Lily because she’s a weapon. They want her because she is the only thing that can destroy them. Protect her, Alexander. Julian... protect Julian too. He was always innocent. Don't let your mother turn him into Nathaniel."

The screen blinked black.

The file terminated with a final, blinking coordinate: LOCATION OF THE PRIMARY LEDGER DECRYPTION KEY: HARBOR DOCK 14, BROOKLYN.

Alexander closed his eyes for three long seconds. The grief that had weighed down his shoulders for a decade dissolved, replaced by a pure, diamond-hard clarity.

Lily was his daughter.

Not an experiment. Not a corporate asset. His child.

"Alexander!" Marcus yelled, violently yanking the steering wheel to the left.

A heavy 30mm cannon burst ripped through the pavement directly ahead of them, turning the asphalt of the highway ramp into a lethal storm of flying stone and shredded rebar. The lead Sikorsky helicopter banked sharply over the river, its side-mounted minigun spooling up for a secondary sweep.

"They’re herding us toward the river!" Marcus shouted. "The bridge ramp is cut off!"

"Turn south!" Alexander commanded, surging to his feet inside the swaying van. "Head for the old industrial docks in Red Hook. Dock 14!"

"We’ll never make the tunnel with that bird on our tail!" Marcus countered, fighting the vibrating steering column as the van clipped a concrete barrier at seventy miles per hour.

Alexander grabbed a heavy, shoulder-fired anti-materiel rifle from the van’s weapons rack—a weapon left behind by Sterling’s elite team.

"Julian," Alexander said, his voice completely level.

The boy looked up from Lily, his young face pale but determined. "Yes, Dad?"

"Take this wheel when Marcus gives the word. Keep it straight."

Alexander climbed out of the van’s sliding door, hooking his combat harness around the interior safety pillar, and pulled himself entirely onto the roof of the speeding vehicle into the hundred-mile-per-hour wind.
