Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Cradle

The screen’s amber text burned against Alexander's retinas, every syllable striking with the force of an executioner’s axe.
Run before Eleanor closes the gates.
Alexander shifted Lily slightly, his left hand snatching the device from the console with casual precision. He tapped the audio playback. Static crackled through the tiny speaker—thin, metallic, and broken by the heavy whirr of twin-rotor turbine engines—followed by a woman’s breath. It was jagged, terrified, but unmistakable.
Helena.
"Alexander?" Eleanor hissed behind him, her voice recovering a fraction of its venomous cadence as she smoothed the crushed fabric of her designer skirt. She watched him intently, her sharp eyes flicking to the red blinking indicator on the handset. "You think you can come back into this city after a decade in the shadows and dictate terms to me? You are a broken soldier living on my grandfather's inheritance."
Alexander didn't turn around. He didn't blink. The grief that had hollowed out his chest ten years ago flared into an inferno. Helena had died—or so the Vance family lawyers and the charred dental records from the Italian police had claimed. Yet the timbre of that recorded whisper was burned into his marrow.
"Marcus," Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
The enforcer snapped to attention. "Sir."
"Clear the floor. Secure Julian in the private suite down the corridor. No calls in or out."
Julian backed away toward the hallway without needing another word, terror replacing whatever arrogance Eleanor had spent months cultivating in the boy. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him.
"You lay a finger on that boy and I’ll have the precinct captains crawl through this building before midnight," Eleanor threatened, though her voice lacked its earlier iron. She took a step toward the wall-mounted communications panel near the fireplace.
Alexander moved before her fingers could touch the buttons.
His arm shot out, grabbing her wrist with an iron grip that forced a sharp yelp of pain from her thin lips. He twisted just enough to lock her in place, leaning down until his eyes—black, cold, and stripped of all filial warmth—were inches from hers.
"Who called that number, Eleanor?"
Her lips twitched. A sinister, triumphant smirk ghosted across her pale face. "You were always a sentimental fool, Alexander. Just like your father. You chased ghosts across three continents while the real world marched forward."
"Whose voice is on that recording?" he growled, the muscles in his neck tightening like steel cables.
Lily whimpered against his shoulder, burying her face into his neck. The sound brought Alexander instantly back to reality. He didn't let his temper spill over onto the child. He released Eleanor’s wrist as if it were contaminated waste.
"Look at her, Alexander," Eleanor murmured, rubbing her bruised wrist with a cruel sneer. "Look closely at that little stray you brought into this house under the delusion of redemption. Do you really believe she carries Vance blood?"
Alexander’s chest tightened. When he had found Lily six months ago in a private orphanage outside Zurich, the DNA match sent by an anonymous courier had verified a 99.8% match with his own markers. He had dropped everything, abandoned his private security firm in Singapore, and brought her directly to the family's primary estate to claim her seat at the table.
"The test was certified," Alexander said flatly.
"Certified by whom?" Eleanor laughed, a dry, mocking rattle. "By whoever needed you back in New York. By whoever needed you inside this penthouse tonight, within range of the crosshairs."
As if on cue, the lights across the twelve-thousand-square-foot penthouse flickered once, twice, and died.

Total darkness plunged the room into a deep void, illuminated only by the blood-red glow of the emergency egress lights along the baseboards. Outside the vast floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights below suddenly twinkled unobstructed by interior glare.
A fraction of a second later, a pinpoint red laser dot appeared on the silk fabric over Alexander’s heart.
