Chapter 13 - Beneath the Citadel

The underground drainage tunnels beneath Sterling Tower smelled of rust, diesel, and stagnant river water. Thirty years ago, Mark's father had built these subterranean conduits to service the tower’s private hydroelectric generators. Only two living people knew the blueprints existed.

Mark, his shoulder tightly wrapped in field bandages and pumped full of combat stimulants, led Clara and Elena through the waist-deep water. Behind them came four heavily armed former Navy SEALs from Mark's oldest private security reserves—men whose loyalties were bought not with company shares, but with battlefield blood.

""The tower’s primary elevator requires biometric authentication from Julian,"" the team leader whispered, checking his night-vision goggles. ""How do we get to the penthouse?""

""We don't use the elevators,"" Mark said, wiping grime from his face. ""The freight service shaft behind the central vault was built with a mechanical counterweight system. It operates on manual cables. It doesn't ping the central security grid.""

They reached the heavy vault door. Mark punched in an eight-digit mechanical override code that had remained unchanged since 1995. The heavy gears turned with a dull thud, and the iron door swung inward, revealing the vertical steel shaft soaring sixty-five stories into the sky.

""Clara,"" Mark said, turning to the young woman. Her eyes were wide, but the terror had been replaced by a feral, maternal resolve. ""When we breach the penthouse, you stay behind the point man. The moment Leo is secure, you take him to the basement garage. Detective Vance is waiting at the south gate with an armored federal escort.""

""I'm not leaving without you,"" Clara said firmly.

""You are leaving with our son,"" Mark commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument. ""That is the only thing that matters.""

They loaded into the steel cargo cage. The team leader engaged the pneumatic winch. With a sharp jolt, the platform began its silent, rapid ascent into the belly of the beast.

Floor 20. Floor 40. Floor 60.

At Floor 64, the emergency brakes ground against the rails with a shriek of metal.

The security alert sirens throughout the building suddenly screamed to life. Red strobe lights bathed the shaft in crimson.

A voice echoed over the service intercom—not Julian's, but Eleanor's cold, aristocratic tone: ""Did you really think I didn't monitor the maintenance shafts, Mark? You always underestimated your mother.""

The cables above them snapped with the deafening sound of a cannon shot.
