Chapter 14 - The Fall of the Matriarch

The platform plunged violently into freefall.

""Brace!"" Mark roared, grabbing Clara and slamming her into the corner of the reinforced cage.

The team leader threw the emergency manual friction lever with both hands, muscles tearing as he forced the brake pads against the vertical guide rails. Sparks sprayed in blinding sheets across the cage. The grinding screech was deafening, the smell of burning friction steel filling their lungs.

With a bone-cracking jolt, the platform slammed to a halt at Floor 65—the executive boardroom level.

The service doors gave way under the impact, bursting open.

Mark rolled out onto the polished marble, weapon drawn. The floor was completely deserted, except for Eleanor Sterling, sitting alone at the head of the boardroom table, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup.

Behind her stood four private security contractors with submachine guns.

""Shoot them,"" Eleanor said casually, not even looking up from her saucer.

Before the guards could level their barrels, Mark's tactical team swept the room with suppressed fire. The guards crumpled to the floor instantly.

Mark strode across the room, kicking Eleanor’s tea cup off the table. It shattered against the wall, hot liquid splashing over her designer suit. Mark slammed his hands on the table, leaning inches from her face.

""Where is my son, Eleanor?""

Eleanor didn't flinch. Her face remained a mask of pure, unadulterated contempt. ""Your son? That gutter rat born from a paid womb? You were supposed to marry into European royalty, Mark! You were supposed to elevate our family to the global elite! Instead, you married that pathetic climber Victoria, and when she failed to give you a child, I had to fix it!""

""You orchestrated Victoria's breakdown,"" Mark realized, horror washing over him. ""You convinced her Leo was Julian's child! You manipulated her into dropping him!""

""Victoria was weak,"" Eleanor hissed. ""She cracked under pressure. Julian is the son I should have had. He understands power. He understands that blood means nothing—leverage is everything.""

Clara stepped forward, her face pale with fury. Without a word, she raised her hand and struck the old woman across the face with such force that Eleanor fell from her chair, sprawling onto the marble floor.

""He's not leverage,"" Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. ""He’s a child.""

Eleanor touched her bleeding lip, glaring up at them with venomous triumph. ""Hit me all you want, little girl. You're too late. Julian is on the rooftop helipad right now. The jet is waiting at JFK, and the private charter leaves for Zurich in twenty minutes.""

She looked at Mark, laughing cruelly. ""You’ll never see him again.""
